Code of Conduct

Workshop Code of Conduct

The organizing committee is dedicated to providing a harassment-free workshop experience for everyone regardless of gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, age or religion. We do not tolerate harassment of conference participants in any form. Sexual language and imagery not relevant to the topic is not appropriate for any conference venue, including talks. Workshop participants violating these rules may be sanctioned or expelled from the workshop at the discretion of the organizing committee.

Harassment includes, but is not limited to:

  • Verbal comments that reinforce social structures of domination (related to gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, age, or religion)

  • Sexual images in talks

  • Deliberate intimidation, online stalking, or following

  • Harassing photography or recording

  • Sustained disruption of talks or other events

  • Unwelcome sexual attention

  • Advocating for, or encouraging, any of the above behavior

Enforcement

Participants asked to stop any harassing behavior are expected to comply immediately. If a participant engages in harassing behavior, workshop organizers retain the right to take any actions to keep the event a welcoming environment for all participants. This includes warning the offender or expulsion from the workshop.

Workshop organizers may take action to redress anything designed to, or with the clear impact of, disrupting the event or making the environment hostile for any participants. We expect participants to follow these rules in every part of the workshop and workshop-related social activities. We think people should follow these rules outside event activities too!

Reporting

If someone makes you or anyone else feel unsafe or unwelcome, please report it as soon as possible. Harassment and other code of conduct violations reduce the value of the workshop for everyone.

You can make a report either personally or anonymously.

Anonymous Report

You can make an anonymous report by filling out the form here (link tbd).

We can’t follow up an anonymous report with you directly, but we will fully investigate it and take whatever action is necessary to prevent a recurrence.

Personal Report

You can make a personal report by emailing the workshop organizers at grooveworkshop2@gmail.com

When taking a personal report, we’ll ask you to tell us about what happened. This can be upsetting, but you won’t be asked to confront anyone and we won’t tell anyone who you are.

The organizing committee will be happy to assist you to feel safe for the duration of the event. We value your attendance.

Expected and Encouraged Behavior

In addition to our policies outlined above regarding harassment and other unacceptable behavior, we have adopted the following guidelines of expected and encouraged behavior:

  1. Exercise respect and consideration in your speech and behavior.

  2. When offering criticism, comment on ideas and content, not individuals.

  3. Share the space. Watch how long you have been speaking and give lesser heard voices a chance to speak.

  4. Think before you speak. Are you adding depth and direction to the conversation? Or are you derailing the conversation or just repeating what someone already said?

  5. Be an ally. If someone who shares your privileges is exerting them over someone who doesn’t, intervene and call them in to consider their behavior.

  6. Be mindful of context and the highly variable backgrounds and experiences of your fellow participants. Don’t assume that everyone has the same experiences as you.
