Dr. Chang-Seon Shon is an assistant professor at Nazarbayev University. He obtained his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering at Texas A&M University. Dr. Shon has served 6 years in R&D of construction material area as both research scientist and lab manager to lead soil, cement, and concrete material characterization laboratory of the Texas A&M Transpiration Institute (TTI) before joining Nazarbayev University. His research areas include cement chemistry, cement hydration, coal combustion by-products (conventional fly ashes, fluidized bed ash), cement paste rheology, infrastructure material characterization, durability of concrete including corrosion of steel rebar, alkali-silica reaction, and sulfate attack, and freeze & thaw resistance in concrete. His expertise also includes microstructural techniques such as optical microscopes, TEM, and SEM/EDS along with other analytical techniques (XRD, DTA/TG, MIP, X-Ray CT) to characterize construction materials. Moreover, other research areas include rehabilitation of pavement, rigid/flexible pavement design, and green building with energy efficiency technology.
