Grief and Mourning in the Age of Climate Change
A Senior Thesis By Rileigh Thompson
A Senior Thesis By Rileigh Thompson
I'd like to claim I planned this senior thesis, but it would be more appropriate to say it came to life on its own - at least in a sense! It started with a small idea in Dr. Jennifer Atkinson's Climate Anxiety, Grief, and Resilience course in Spring Quarter of 2023 and spiraled quickly into a near yearlong project co-authoring a book chapter, guest speaking in college classrooms, and holding a Funeral for the Future. And, I'm not done yet! This website is a culmination of what I have accomplished in a little under a year with the guidance of Dr. Jennifer and support of many friends and family. I hope to continue this work as I complete my undergraduate degree and move into the workforce. I can't wait to see what the future has in store!
“The ability to mourn [is] one of the most important signs of whether,
in the face of devastating loss, persons and society as a whole can learn to act
on behalf of genuine social, political and ecological renewal.”
~ Douglas Burton Christie, The Gift of Tears
