After hearing about my work with Dr. Atkinson to co-author a chapter on ecological grief and the value of mourning rituals in the face of climate change, Professor Midori Sakura at Cascadia College offered me an opportunity to speak to one of her classes. While the topics I cover within my part of the chapter provided the base for the presentation, I was able to incorporate more about myself and my own identity as a young person in the age of climate change. The individuals in the class were very engaged and interested in the material (purely based off of my observations), and asked questions throughout the presentation. Professor Sakura's hope was that I could provide her students with basic knowledge about the importance of acknowledging their eco-emotions and a potential pathway for processing them. I truly hope that they all stepped away with at least a seed of knowing that they aren't alone and their grief about their future matters.Â
One student ended up attending the Funeral for the Future I offered on February 4th, which made me hopeful that I did in fact offer something to the individuals I spoke to in Dr. Sakura's class!
