ADVICE: FROM DM TO PLAYER... IF YOU NEED HELP, START HERE.
If you are a low-level player, remember that the following spells can prove very useful:
Combat:
Shield (Wizard)
Mage Armor (Wizard)
Sleep (Wizard)
Expeditious Retreat (Wizard)
Identify (Wizard)
Bless (Cleric)
Command (Cleric)
Divine Favor (Cleric)
Investigative Or Utilitarian:
Comprehend Languages (Wizard & Cleric)
Hold Portal (Wizard)
Detect Thoughts (Wizard)
Augury (Cleric)
Tenser's Floating Disc (Wizard)
Disguise Self (Wizard)
Arcane Lock (Wizard)
Knock (Wizard)
Locate Object (Wizard)
See Invisibility (Wizard)
If you are a high-level (epic) player, remember the following:
Many of your skills (such as GATHER INFORMATION!) now have epic-level applications (see HOUSE RULES tab.)
Limited Wish can be more useful than you think. Need to re-open a closed portal? Limited Wish can do it, unless the portal is somehow protected. Need to know the answer to a single question? Limited Wish has a 70% chance to answer it! (at the DM's discretion, of course.)
Contact Other Plane and Commune are extremely useful spells. Do not overlook them! In fact, Contact Other Plane has epic usages (see HOUSE RULES tab.)
Wondering about a spell you've never seen before, or how to go about making a unique or unusual spell that is currently non-existent? Knowledge, Arcana is the skill to have.
Also: If you are the CHOSEN of a particular deity, then you have carte blanche to knock on his or her door, and bug him or her for help. Why? Because you're the chosen, you're like their favorite pet. If a door-to-door salesman comes to your door, you shoo him away. But if your loyal dog scratches on the back screen door, you let him in, and give him a treat. To your deity, you're like the loyal dog; i.e., they give you a lot of leeway, because they love you. So don't forget to take advantage of that fact. The worst that can happen is that you'll be told, "bad dog!" and / or get booted back out into the "back yard."
