Hi! I'm Greg. I'm 17 years old and a junior at Carlmont High School in Belmont, CA. I'm a editor for the Carlmont journalism program, Scot Scoop. In my free time, I enjoys playing soccer, hanging out with friends, and spending time with family. You can read about my journalistic journey and awards on this page.
My journalistic journey
Writing. Essays. English. I don't like those. At least, that's what I thought before I walked into my first journalism class in 10th grade. It was still writing, there were still essays, and it was still English. But something was different.
From the moment I stepped into that classroom, I was attracted by the energy and excitement that surrounded the art of journalism. From learning to write a completely new style, to learning to investigate in a completely new way were all factors that drew me in. It wasn’t just about putting words on paper and publishing it anymore; it was much bigger. It was about telling the stories that mattered, uncovering the truth, and connecting with people on a deeper level.
My first assignment was to go to a water polo game. Armed with a notepad, a pen, and a camera, I navigated through the maze of supporters and eager players desperatley trying to take good notes and good photos. I felt a sense of purpose that was entirely new to me. After interviewing the players and coaches, I realized that every story had its unique angle, and every person had a perspective worth sharing. This wasn’t just writing for the sake of writing—it was bringing voices to life. Each game is different, with different sports, different people, and different results. Uncovering the truth and analyzing the games is genuinely fulfilling.
I have now written dozens of articles, been a photographer for my school's news magazine, and interviewed hundreds of people, and I don't plan on stopping here. In the middle of my first year in this program, I applied to be an intern editor. I was accepted, trained, and taught how the editing process works. Now, I am one of our program's sports editors, editing and publishing work from staff writers, helping them improve and building on an amazing journalism program.
In the future, as I continue to explore the world of journalism, I will carry with me the numerous lessons learned from these year. I am driven by a curiosity to uncover the stories that matter. Writing essays and English may not have been my favorite subjects at the start, but a slight change in perspective is all that is needed.
