When I got into IUPUI, I just discovered my why. My why is my personal mission statement, to invest in individuals so that they know they matter. I wasn't sure how I was going to achieve this, but I knew that I wanted to have an impact. I took H200 in my fall semester of Junior year. I wasn't too familiar with the Honors College and I wasn't sure what I really expected of myself. I had these ideas of what an honors student should be. I thought that I had to get all As. I thought that everything that I did had to be absolutely perfect with no mess-ups or mistakes. I thought that I had to have everything together and know what I was doing, after all, that is the only way that I can invest into the lives of others. I am really glad that I was wrong about that. While it wasn't long ago when I joined honors, I feel that I have learned so much and I have taken full advantage of all the opportunities that have been given to me. I am so blessed to have all the people that are around me and that have pushed me to be the person that I am today. Those people taught me to be confident and not to compare myself to others. I learned that each and every one of us are on our own journeys, and that each of us are going at our own pace. It's okay to not be "ahead" or to be "behind." Life is a marathon and not a sprint and it's important to enjoy the ride, not focus only on the destination.
I have served in many capacities and roles. I was the Director of Human Resources at Chick-fil-A. I was the Secretary for Honors College Student Council. I was an H200 Lead Mentor. I was a Lifegroup leader. I was a Cox Scholar. I could go on, but all of that is listed in here. I used all of these positions to grow and push myself beyond what I thought that I could handle. I wanted to continue to pursue my why and to chase after the things that really matter in life. I wouldn't have gotten to the place that I am at now without God and the amazing support that I had around me. I got to build my leadership skills, communication skills, and my people skills to further give back. I am very appreciative of the people I had the privilege to work alongside, and I cannot wait to see where this next chapter in my life leads me.
I had the opportunity to lead many teams and projects in my undergraduate career. Being a leader doesn't always mean having a title, and often times, the places that I was the most effective leader were the ones where I didn't have a leadership role per say. For example, I helped lead and coordinate my I-Core project and allowed for our team to come out with a successful project thanks in part to not only my leadership, but the others in my group. Being able to practice and make mistakes allowed me to build upon my academic and professional skills that I don't know I would be able to function properly without. I was able to apply a lot of this knowledge that I had learned in my job and other school projects which I talk about in this e-portfolio. This has allowed me to be ready for an ever changing dynamic and turbulent world, and I feel I am now ready to take it on.
Looking back, honors has been crucial for my growth, and I am so blessed that I had the opportunity to join and participate in this amazing program. I would not have had the amazing opportunities and experiences that I have had the privilege of doing without the skills that I have learned in my time here. I was awarded IUPUI's Top 10, The 2024 Outstanding Student in Human Resource Management, and other honors. While I am honored to have even been considered for such honors, I didn't do everything that I did just to earn those high accomplishments. I did it because I chased my why. I worked hard because I knew that it would impact the lives of others. I've found that the more that I pour in to people, the more they seem to give back me. I think that is the most rewarding thing. That is what gets me out of bed every morning. I am truly blessed to be surrounded by such amazing people, and I am so glad that my impact has helped make their lives better. I hope someday that I will have the opportunity to go back and get my MBA, to continue investing in people. Until then, I'll continue to grow and develop myself to be better and better, and give back like so many have given to me.
HON-H-200 course is designed as a first course for all Honors College students. This course helps you develop your identity as an Honors College student, provide opportunities to form connections with Honors peers, faculty, and staff, and think intentionally about planning your experience as an Honors College student to meet your academic and personal goals. This is where my honors journey started and I am so thankful that I had the opportunity to take this class, as a lot of doors opened for me that I didn't realize for me.
Looking back at everything this class has taught me, I am most proud of what I have really learned about myself in this course. This class has helped show me that I am so much more than an honors student. I was intimidated by the expectations of me and the requirements of the honors program, to begin with, but I have learned that I really have so much freedom. The most important lesson that I have learned in this class is that my honors experience is what I make of it. I can do anything and go in any direction I want to go in not just in this program, but in my career and in life. What really matters, however, is the impact that you have on others and the ways that you help change their lives. That's what really matters and what I will continue to go and do moving forward.
The I-Core semester is designed to give several real-time experiences that challenge you to solve cross-functional business problems while developing your professional and leadership skills. The final I-Core case—also known as the Kelley "rite of passage"—is an extensive and intense team project in which students demonstrate all they have learned.
We worked with the Vedere Press and created I-Design, a design app for interior designers to use to help design rooms.
This presentation goes over the different intrinsic motivators and how different teams and groups can use these motivators in order to work together as a team and overcome difficult challenges such as group disagreements.
Deliverable 1 first explains our project idea for the Vedere Press, I-Design. This deliverable helps explore our project idea in depth, how feasible our project idea would be, and assesses the project's competitors.
Deliverable 2 talks about the target market of interior designers and I-Design. The Service Blueprint, Pricing Strategy, and Customer Specifications and Requirements are based of the persona and included in Deliverable 2.
Deliverable 3 discusses the Developmental and Operational Resources Plan for I-Design. Based on the two plans, a financial analysis is created which a breakeven is created and revenue for the project over a five year period is determined.
Deliverable 4 discusses the details of the marketing strategy including details of product, price, place, and promotion details that are improtant for I-Design's success. The persona is also used to develop specific specifications and a distribution channel that would work with I-Design's business model.
This presentation was presented to the Vedere Press as the final presentation. Our group recommended that Vedere Press accept the project based on the positive IRR and NPV.
This project was by far one of the hardest things that I have done so far in my college career. At the beginning of this project, I wasn't sure how in the world I would be able to find a new stream of revenue for a real-world company. With the help of an amazing team, we not only developed a new service for Vedere Press but found a way to make it profitable. This was by far one of my favorite challenges to undertake and I am so thankful for all the people that supported me throughout this whole semester. I can't wait to apply what I have learned and take it into the real world
For my honors contract in Intro to Honors, I decided to interview 3 different individuals who are professionals in HR. The goal of this project is to gain better insight on what HR professionals do from the day to day and what advice can I take away?
I decided to interview three different people involed in different disciplines. I interviewed a human resource business partner, a benefits specialists, and an employee relations officer. I gained a lot of insight which I go in depth with this paper.
The biggest takeaway that I have gotten out of these interviews however is that there is no right career path. Everyone has their own journey and different steps on getting there. All three of my interviewees had different paths to where they got to where they are today. They all went to college in different places and all worked for different companies and in different roles and got different experiences to really shape to who they are today, but no ones path is going to be the same and that’s okay. That’s something that I’ve been personally nervous about and I’m really happy to have learned this lesson in part thanks to this honors project. I’m very glad that I got to connect with all of these professionals and I really want to continue to do network and interview different professionals in the future as well.
Looking back, I am really thankful that I had the opportunity to learn more about what's happening in the business world. The world is an ever changing place, and I personally feel that the world has become less empathetic. This project made me realize not only that empathy and rapport are important, but just how important. All but one of the topics that I researched about business trends were about people and the impact that the pandemic and the effects from it have had. I believe that this has helped me in building upon my Global mindset that I have been trying to work on. I am extremely thankful that I had the opportunity to do this project and I hope that others will do the same as I have.
I joined Honors College Student Concil my first semeseter being in Honors. Clara Pineda, who was the Treasurer on the council at the time, had told me that I could have popcorn if I came to this meeting happening right now in the Honors College right now. I, of course, won't turn down popcorn and went. That was one of the best decisions that I had made in my undergraduate career.
Later that month, I ran for Secretary on the council and won. I honestly had no idea what I was doing, but that's okay. I have learned that everyone's path is different and sometimes it's okay to see where life takes you. Below is the story and impact that I had in the two years that I held that position.
In my junior year, I was elected to be secretary for the honors college. I help coordinate events, plan and approve funding requests for other organizations, as well as take attendance and minutes for our meetings. I like being in this role because I see it as a way of giving back to the honors college community as well as helping me build my teamwork skills.
I had the amazing opportunity to help organizations inside and outside of the honors college and network with great people.
Each meeting, I was over taking the meeting minutes and recording the different initiatives that we took on. Here is an example of one of the meeting minutes that I had put together.
This helped me gain great administrative skills and helped grow in my civic leadership and engagement. It was amazing helping out other honors organizations fund events and initiatives that were important to them, such as movie nights for the honors dorms and end of the semester socials. I was really excited to see what the next year has to offer.
In my senior year, I was re-elected to be the secretary for the honors college. I had a few challenges that I took on such as increasing engagement within the honors college as well as advertising the honors college more.
I wanted to make sure since this would be my last year at IUPUI, that I would leave a positive impact on all the organizations that I was apart of. I started taking on more responsibilities which I have listed below.
One of the initiatives that I started was having the Honors College Studnet Council Table more. This was a picture at the Involvement Expo which took place in the Fall. We had a lot of students attend and get exposed to the Honors College. We networked not only with a lot of people, but campus organizations which we were then able to hold events such as Canvas and Cookies with the Arts and Culture Society later in the Spring.
In addition to doing the meeting minutes, I was also tasked with creating the agenda as well. This allowed me to push more initiatives such as adding discussions for more collaborations with other campus organizations. That resulted in a full executive board and then more student engagement with the Honors College Student Council.
Looking back at my time in the Honors College Student Council, I am very proud of the work that I was able to accomplish in my time there. We were even able to win the Outstanding Registered Student Organization Award which was an amazing accomplishment. It was my goal for my senior year to have an impact, and I am very glad to report that I was able to have a positive impact and leave this great organization to great people. I felt that my global mindset has grown significantly. I have met a lot of people and through listening to concerns of students, I have learned to be more empathetic, which I believe is an important skill to have. I have also grown a lot in civic engagement, which I wouldn't have been able to gain these skills without HCSC. I can't wait to see what HCSC does in the future and the impact that they will have, and I am so greatful for this opportunity.
When I was in my first year at IUPUI, I was put on Academic watch. I honestly had too much on my plate and it took a lot of time to balance. I was put on academic watch and I knew that I had to change what I was doing. At the time, I knew that something had to change and I remember how helpful someone mentoring me would have been. I eventually found that help in the form of my H200 mentors. It truly changed my college experience to be what it is today. I can honestly say that the people that were put in my life to help me is a huge part of my success not just in college but in life.
I knew that I wanted to give back the same way that so many people at IUPUI gave to me. That's why I got involved in mentoring as much as I did. I wanted to make sure that students were able to have the same success and achievement. Here are some of my students that I had in H200 class. I remember how much of an impact H200 had on me, and I wanted to make sure that others that took H200 had that same experience.
I had a lot of responsibilites as a mentor, but one of them was helping organize the class and the structure. Here is one of the PowerPoints I did for one of my classes. H200 taught me a lot about classroom management and the importance of learning and development. While my major isn't education related, learning and development is such a huge aspect of what human resources entails, and I am so glad to have had this experience.
My senior year, I had the opportunity to join the leadership team for the H200 program. Part of my job was helping develop other mentors. I was asked to create different trainings for new mentors to do so that they would be prepared to mentor. Above are some of the trainings that I created to help with H200 mentor orientation.
Looking back at my time in the H200 Mentoring program, I can confidently say that it contributed greatly to pursuing my why. I am so glad that I had the opportunity to work alongside such great people. I have felt that even though I had poured so much into my mentees, I some how get more than I give into the program. It is so rewarding and an honor to see my mentees go and do amazing things. For example, one of my mentees who I just had this past semester as of writing this just won USG Senator of the Year, her first year of being in the honors college! I am so blessed to work and mentor such amazing people, and I will be so sad to close this chapter in my life, but so thankful I got to experience it.
