3D Environment Design
Over the past year you have been introduced to a number of specialisms relating to games development including, concept art, Animation & VFX, 2D/3D game development, 3D modelling and texturing. Now is the time for you to take your skills further and spend some time looking at how to incorporate 3D skills into the design of an environment. The environment will be chosen for you and you will need to research into your target audience and theme to successfully create an environment that works.
Task One - Pre-Production Planning
Before embarking on the design and creation of your environment, it is important to understand the pre-production processes.
Within this section you will need to spend time allocating job roles and planning your project.
This section will allow you concentrate on the following criteria;
2.1 - Demonstrate independence in decision making in planning and developing creative solutions.
Project Challenges
What are the main project challenges and constraint?
Software / Hardware Budgeting
Costing for hardware and software if this was a commissioned project?
Risk Assessment
Outline a risk assessment that would apply to an office based environment and comply with legislation outlined by current Health and Safety regulatory bodies.
Allocation of Roles
Show evidence of how you have allocated roles within your group.
Group Checklist
Show evidence of how you have allocated tasks as a group.
Gannt Chart
Create a Gannt chart that illustrates your development schedule and place it here.
Development Cycle
Show your production cycle/pipeline. This could be as a flow chart/diagram.
Task Two - Research & Initial Ideas
Now that you have completed your initial planning, as a team you will need to spend some time researching into your allocated theme / environment. This task will give yopu the opportunity to dive further into your environment and spend time researching the individual assets that will make up your environment.
This section will allow you concentrate on the following criteria;
1.1 - Analyse the characteristics of the audience for a chosen creative media production activity.
1.2 - Interpret research activity to develop ideas for a creative production.
2.1 - Demonstrate independence in decision making in planning and developing creative solutions.
2.2 - Select appropriate media and processes to communicate ideas for an identified audience.
Target Audience
Who are your target audience and what considerations are needed i.e cultural, ethical etc.?
Research into your target audience using images and annotations.
Theme Research
Research into your theme using images and annotations.
3D Environment Research
Research into a range of 3D environments using images and annotations.
Unique Selling Points Research
Research into a range of unique selling points using images and annotations.
Floor Plans
Research into a range of different floor plans using images and annotations.
Moodboards
Include any additional moodboards that have supported your research as well as including annotations.
Task Three - Collaborative Development
Now that you move into the development of your project, it is vital that you communicate as a team and share ideas. This also presents an opportunity for you to locate any issues or highlight any issues with project management. Within this section you will need to keep screenshot evidence of your team meetings or group discussions.
This section will allow you concentrate on the following criteria;
2.1 - Demonstrate independence in decision making in planning and developing creative solutions.
Team Meeting,
Include a screenshot of your weekly team meeting and insert annotation.

Task Four - Project Development
With the development of your projects underway, it is important to showcase the tools, techniques and processes you are utilising. Within this section you will need to keep screenshot of evidence of your individual progress on the project.
This section will allow you concentrate on the following criteria;
2.1 - Demonstrate independence in decision making in planning and developing creative solutions.
2.2 - Select appropriate media and processes to communicate ideas for an identified audience.
Modelling Development,
Include all modelling development in this section.
Evidence your working methods, e.g the tools, techniques and processes used to create your environment/props. Include imagery to back-up your explanations.
UV Development,
Include all UV development in this section.
Evidence your working methods, e.g the tools, techniques and processes used to create your environment/props. Include imagery to back-up your explanations.
Texturing Development,
Include all texture development in this section.
Evidence your working methods, e.g the tools, techniques and processes used to create your environment/props. Include imagery to back-up your explanations.
Unreal Engine 4 Development,
Include all UE4 development in this section.
Task Five - Final Renders
Place your final renders or video walk-through from Unreal Engine 4 within this section.
This section will allow you concentrate on the following criteria;
2.2 - Select appropriate media and processes to communicate ideas for an identified audience.
Task Six - Self Reflection & Evaluation
You must then write an evaluation or postmortem of the development of your project and your final outcome. When writing this, consider what went well and what didn’t go so well with the project and why. You should provide a series of actions/improvements that you would make or do differently for your next project
Your evaluation should be no less than 500 words.
You will also need to show your final concept to others and gather their thoughts on how well your design meets your target audience
This section will allow you concentrate on the following criteria;
3.1 - Critically evaluate creative solutions against identified audience characteristics.
