Connecting Nature with Land Planning

Prototype App for Green Infrastructure managment in Norway

This is an early-stage prototype solution-builder, co-developed within the Norwegian Research Council project GreenPlan, to provide knowledge and tools to support sustainable land planning by taking into account ecosystem functionality and connectivity, thus preserving long term ecosystem functions and the provisioning of Ecosystem Services

Module 1 and 2 enable to understand how species perceive the landscape in terms of resources available, core areas, corridors, barriers to movements, and areas sensitive to perturbations. Module 3 offers functionalities for land prioritization and scenario analyses for ensembles of species and ecosystems. The prototype App offers test-maps for Oslo Municipality to test early-stage functionalities and anchor the dialogue with users, so we can acquire conceptual and technical feedbacks for the co-creation of the final land planning support tools

 The App enables to:

Understand the need for Connectivity Conservation

Ecological Connectivity is essential for ecosystems functioning. Understanding and safeguarding networks of core areas and corridors (Green Infrastructure) need to become an integral aspect of sustainable land planning and EIA

Access Connectivity Maps for land planning

Maps hihglighting functional areas and movement corridors are essential for sustaianble land planning, to halt the global nature decline chiefly caused by piecemeal infrastructure development

Zonate: prioritize areas for conservation & restoration

Identifying pririty areas where conservation or restoration activities would be most beneficial for the entire Ecological Network is crucial for sustainable land planning

Test scenario of changes in land use and climate

Simulations / scenario analyses allow to foresee the impact of changes in infrastructure (e.g. remove roads & cottages) or climate. This allows identify and rank the most effective mitigation measures and land planning alternatives
