People of navigators, the Greeks built many colonies on the shores of the Mediterranean and the Black Sea, such as Marseille, Naples or Byzantium (Istanbul). Later, Alexander the Great, during his conquests, founded several cities which often bore his name (Alexandria), the most famous being in Egypt. The Greek tongue then became the language of international communication from Europe to India and Ethiopia.
