A Short History of the Club

The Grantham Music Club began in 1929 with one hundred and sixty four members each paying a season's subscription of 18s 6d.

The meeting place has changed over the years from the Guildhall to the Westgate Hall, to the Cooperative Hall, to Kesteven and Grantham Girls' School, to the King's School, back to KGGS, and then to the Priory Ruskin Academy, formerly Central School, Rushcliffe Road. And now most of our concerts are now performed in ChristChurch Finkin Street, with occasional concerts at St Wulfram's church..

Many names, famous in the musical world past and present, appear in the annals of the Club. Among them are Eileen Joyce, Sir Peter Pears, Lady Barbirolli, Leon Goossens, Jack Brymer, Joseph Cooper, Carlo Curley, Osian Ellis, Nicholas Daniel, Julius Drake, Richard Markham, Chilingirian Quartet, The Scholars, Cantamus, Brodowski Quartet,  Red Priest and several members of the Kennah-Mason family.

Grantham Music Club continues to present concerts covering a wide range of musical tastes and performed by first-rate professional musicians. Our aim is to maintain the very high standards of past and present musical performance as well as the tradition of creating a welcoming atmosphere for all our members and other music lovers in our community.
