The GRAIN-VOC project is organised into four interconnected work packages that guide the research from experimental preparation to data interpretation and dissemination.
WP1 – Project Management and Dissemination
Ensures efficient coordination, reporting, scientific communication, and dissemination of results to researchers, stakeholders, and the wider public.
WP2 – Wheat Grain Preparation and Infection Experiments
Includes a pilot study to validate the experimental design, methods, and logistical feasibility, and the main experiment, which includes the preparation of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) grains for artificial infection by Fusarium graminearum. Additionally, this WP will characterize the production and levels of mycotoxins such as deoxynivalenol (DON), zearalenone (ZEA), and T-2.
WP3 – VOC Profiling and Stable Isotope Analysis
Focuses on the establishment of a detailed and reliable profile of VOC emissions and isotopic compositions under controlled infestation conditions. This will contribute to a deeper understanding of the interaction between grains and fungal pathogens at the molecular level.
WP4 – Data Integration and Interpretation
Combines all data obtained from mycotoxin production, VOC emissions during fungal infection, and stable isotope analysis of emitted VOCs along with biological and statistical analyses to interpret metabolic pathways, identify diagnostic markers, and generate scientifically robust conclusions.
