The project combines controlled biological experiments with state-of-the-art analytical techniques.
Wheat grains are subjected to carefully designed fungal infection experiments under controlled storage conditions, enabling systematic monitoring of infection development and associated chemical changes.
Volatile compounds emitted from grains are collected using headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) and analysed by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS).
Compound-specific stable carbon isotope analysis (GC-C-IRMS) is applied to trace the metabolic origin of detected VOCs and distinguish plant responses from fungal metabolism.
Additional analyses include mycotoxin quantification, microbiological assessment, and multivariate statistical modelling to integrate chemical and biological datasets into a comprehensive understanding of plant–pathogen interactions during grain storage.
