BELIEVABLE CREATURE DESIGN

My name is Robin Boonacker, also known online as TheRedBirdArt, I am a concept designer, illustrator and 3D artist with a semi-realistic style focused on creature / character design and environment art.

I have been fascinated and inspired by nature and animals from an early age. By using this fascination and inspirition, in combination with different design principles, I try to create unique and credible designs that fit within the context of the respective world and environment. I always try to push myself to create authentic and unique designs. In order to achieve that goal I have spent a lot of time studying human and animal anatomy, shapes, line work and textures in order to achieve a certain balance, harmony and movement in my work. In addition, I combine both 2D and 3D in my work to create a balanced concept work, and to present the final work in the best possible way.

As a game artist, how can I create creature design concept art, within the context of a No Man's Sky / Monster Hunter type game, designing the creatures in a credible / believable way towards the player and so that they belong in their own alien environment?

It's very clear to me where my fascination, inspiration and passion lies: Creature Design. I prefer to draw something that has to do with nature or animals. My passion lies with animals and nature. I really enjoy being outside, and I also enjoy photographing things that I can use in my work later on. It's very fascinating to me to think about how things work in nature. Why things act the way they act. I like to think about these things in my designs and drawings. How does it live? Where does it live? What does it eat? What kind of environment does it live in? What is their defense mechanism? How does it eat? How does it get its food? How can it survive in the given circumstances of the planet? And much more!

Product

During this project I want to focus on creature design, and especially the credibility / believability aspect of it. I am going to create / design a non-existent alien world or planet with a number of conditions / rules. What would creatures living here look like and how would they move around? The final product is the final planet and the information on this planet, with player information and communication. I want to make at least 10 separate concept paintings and at least 3 finalized detailed creature designs.

I want to present the work on a (portfolio) site. The ultimate goal is that people can easily see my work and contact me.

Context

The work I'm going to make consists of.

1. Stand-alone art pieces, or work that can be used as a cinematic art piece, for film or games. And 2. work that can be used by the following artist "in line" who can, for example, fully develop my work in 3D, or prepare my 3D model for in-game (animations, etc.).

World / player context

I want to design these creatures as if they were used in a game, like Monster Hunter or No Man's Sky. As a "player" you must therefore be able to interact with these creatures. I want to display this 'player interaction' for each unique creature, and what kind of different interactions you can have with these creatures. That interaction must be clear / visible within the design of the creature.

The player is a human researcher looking for other life on other planets. They are researchers / hunters and want to take various samples back to their own planet. They want new creatures for their own planet, for the food chain, but also transport, companions, etc.

target audience

  1. The player / user. People who are interested in games with creatures in them, like Monster Hunter and No Man's Sky,.

  2. Concept art, creature design professionals who are active in the work field / industry of creative media.

Goals

The projects value for me is that it is mainly preparatory work for the future and when I graduate. I want to use this to build a portfolio that I can then forward to different companies. With this project I also want to try to step out of my comfort zone, I want to create unique and interesting designs that fit within the environment and story and have a credible function.

I want to show this work on a portfolio site to that the target audience can easily find all of the work and information that goes with the work, this way they will also be able to contact me if they are interested in my work and would like to know more.

On this portfolio site I want to show the work in an interactive way. So that this planet and creatures become a story that you are taken into.

Future goals

To me it’s really clear what I want to do; make art, especially creatures. My goal is to turn this thing that I love to do most, into a job. And that I can get a job where I can work on different film / game projects to help design different concepts and characters.
