First Impressions

Arrival Date: 04/16/23

I arrived on Sunday, April 16th and was dropped off with my host family at around 10:30AM. Upon arrival, I was greeted by all the children in the family as well as the parents. 10:30AM is pretty early so the family was barely awake and had not had breakfast yet. I was shown my room and was suprised that a family of 5 did not have many belongings. The apartment was very plain with modern furniture and family pictures adorned the walls, however, the usual "clutter" you would think to see was nowhere to be found in the home. I was shown my room and was able to take a shower and eat breakfast with the family. The shower only had half a door so I was very confused as to how I would manage to not get water everywhere.

After showering, the family asked if I wanted to go to the club with them. It was a miracle I said yes seeing as the previous night I was in Amsterdam and did not sleep at all. I stayed up until we left for our flight at 4:00AM. Barcelona is very beautiful. The weather is amazing, but very humid and the vegatation is similar to Florida or Alabama.

The country club the family took me to was obviously for those who could afford it. I met so many different, friendly people and it was very obvious every person at the club was very wealthy. It was a culture shock to be sure. Especially when the family ordered me a 3 course meal with drinks and desserts, while it seemed like the most typical thing in the world to them. It was absolutely mindblowing.

First Day of School: 04/17/23

I set an alarm for 7:00AM in the morning which was wayyyy too early. I was trying to get up earlier so that I did not take the bathroom while the kids needed to get ready for school, however, I found out that we didn't leave for school until 8:35AM and me using the bathroom was fine since the kids only use it right before we leave.

The walk to school is about 15 minutes and the nanny takes the kids to school. I was trailing behind, sweating, and out of breath. The weather in Barcelona is very humid, but also windy and cold at the same time. So, I am sweating but freezing continually while I am walking or in school.

My mentor teacher, Miss Cris Ferrer is fantastic! She cares so much about her students and is an English teacher meaning that she only teaches classes in English to 3rd graders!!

The school was so beautiful and vibrant. It is apparent that both students and teachers are happy here.
