I intern at Afropop Worldwide twice a week for sixteen hours. How I usually break it up is a straight eight on Wednesday, and a four hour shift on Friday, working remotely from campus on Saturday. This Wednesday however, given I had obligations at school later that day, I only worked a four hour shift. During this time I did what I normally do. I posted on the social media accounts (Twitter/Facebook) for Afropop, and began a research assignment. In regards to the social media posting, I had shared an interview with renowned world music singer Johnny Clegg, an article I had written about r&b singer Kelela's latest album, "Take Me Apart", a writeup about singer Ayo Awosika's new album, and a podcast, "Make Farming Cool". These were also posted to the Facebook page of Afropop Worldwide. In regards to my research assignment, I began looking up articles about gqom. Gqom is a burgeoning style of music in Africa that is a street-savvy take on contemporary house music. It's very danceable, but it's also very heavy and dark. I really enjoyed looking into it, and the music is actually phenomenal. All in all, Wednesday was a short day but productive day at Afropop. That day I had also met a new fellow intern, Jade. I forget where she said she commutes from, but she was pleasant to work with.

Friday proved to be a challenge for me. I was slated to work a straight eight that day, from 10AM-6PM. I was up on time, and on board the train on time. The problem however was the subway system. The D train had delays all over the railways, and in two and a half hours I had traveled only half the distance it takes me to get to Afropop Worldwide. My commute on average takes me an hour and a half one way, and I hadn't even made it halfway in almost double the time. Thus, once the train stopped where I could transfer (Herald Square), I got off and took the 1 Train back up to campus. I got in touch with my supervisor, Akornefa Akyea, and told her about what happened. She assigned me work to do at home, which was once again updating the social media accounts and to continue researching about gqom. Given that it was a slower week at Afropop, I mostly shared the same articles from last time. I listened to another gqom compilation after that, and took some notes on it. On Saturday, I spent my time researching more about gqom music as well, also helping to answer back Afropop Worldwide listeners on Soundcloud.
