Nature has no vote and no seat at the table, yet every decision we make affects Nature. We’re doing better.
The Green Party of Florida is the first political party in the U.S. to embed the Voice of Nature in our governance structure with the addition of a Nature Director. We urge you to do the same. Here’s steps you might take:
For Candidates and Public Servants
How You Can Platform A Nature Guardian
• Name Nature as part of your campaign
Publicly commit to appointing a Nature Guardian, a designated voice or advocate for Nature, in your campaign and public offices to which you serve.
• Frame Nature as good governance
A Nature Guardian brings long-term, good stewardship into decisions that too often focus only on short-term electoral cycles. Promote and educate on how a Nature Guardian can act for the Rights of Nature.
• Make the commitment concrete
Pledge* to put Nature’s interests into budgets, planning, and procurement, asking at every major vote or decision,
“What Would Nature Say?”
• Bring Nature into public service
Ensure Nature has a voice and a seat within governance structures, on committee seats, council votes, and oversight bodies.

How to Embed a Nature Guardian into Governance Structures
• Appoint a Nature Guardian
Add a representative for Nature to your council, committee, or board whose role it is to advance the interests of the natural world in every decision that is made.
• Appoint that representation to fit within your structure
A Nature Guardian can sit as a board director, an advisory seat, or on a committee. The more formal the role, the stronger it is embedded into your governance structure.
• Embed Nature into your governance structure
Amend or write your by-laws, charter, constitution, or terms of reference so that Nature’s voice is embedded and outlasts electoral cycles or organizational overhaul.
• Be an advocate for wider change
Build trust, grow the movement and lead by example; the more people who give Nature rights to be heard, to participate, and to be part of our decision-making processes, the more this will lead to long-term systemic change.
