Gomo Coop: the firts cooperative participative supermarket in Latin America is about to open its doors in São Paulo!
Right in the city of São Paulo's heart, we will open our store, an innovative supermarket where shoppers are also owners and participate in the operation of the store. This idea has been successful for years in cities like New York, Lisbon, Paris, Berlin and Brussels. Now, it's São Paulo's turn to experience this model.
Our space is currently being renovated at Rua Santa Isabel, 172 - República, São Paulo, Brazil.
Why do we need your support?
Opening a supermarket starts with stocking the shelves—in cash.
While large chains pressure producers to provide products free of charge at store openings, a cooperative like ours is born without credit, privileges, or agreements that compromise the autonomy of producers. That's why we need the support of those who believe that a different supermarket is possible, with respect and commitment to producers and suppliers.
And what are the differences between our model and a traditional market?
At Gomo Coop, to access 100% organic produce and a wide variety of organic and conventional essential items at good prices, each person contributes just three hours per month to simple tasks—such as operating the cash register, cleaning the store, or restocking the shelves. Our operation is non-profit. All savings from collective labor go back to the community in discounts and store improvements. And what's more! Each person votes on decisions, monitors finances, and participates in the management of a common good: our cooperative.
Why donate to Gomo Coop?
Help building a more sustainable and fair solidarity business
We are a supermarket tha informs the origin and distribution network of the food we sell
We have a better version of what you consume on a daily basis
Help Brazil to have its first member-owned and operated nonprofit supermarket
We are transparent! We inform our members of the price breakdown and help them saving money too!
Currently, we have 335 members and a more active group of 59 people. Since our first meeting, 4 years ago, we've been diving into and studying the Park Slope Food Coop model, trying to understand how could it be implemented in our city, our culture, and our reality.
Recently, we held several exhibitions and activities that were very enriching. These events helped us grow and learn even more as a community.
Since the beginning of September 2025, we are joining efforts to renovate our store.
YES! All you have to do is choose the currency (euro or dollar) and make your donation. We will be extremely thankful, no matter the ammount.
The word gomo can be literally translated as wedge, or segment. We've chosen this name because we understand that each of us is a part of a bigger structure, a bigger fruit, we are all wedges of the same tangerine.
The first aim of our campaign is to be able to pay our suppliers for our first products that will fill our shelves for our opening! When we reach this aim, the donations will also help us to buy our bulk structure, so we can also sell more products with less plastic use.
