Report of Captain's Day outing, Woodenbridge, Tuesday, May 19th and Wednesday, 20th 2026.

There was a certain amount of anxiety about the weather on Tuesday, players searching their forecasts for assurance, but the day continued to improve during our rounds, fresh conditions, light rain and wind mostly, but pleasant.

The course was in great condition, considering the effect of the weather in early Spring, and on-going improvements being carried out.

Many thanks to those who were a great help with the cards, especially Conor, Mairéad and Ray and all others who were so generous. After a lovely 4-course dinner with plenty of social interaction and humourous banter, the two representatives from our sponsor, Cornmarket were introduced and welcomed, Bobby Poste and Eoin Hutchinson, thanked for their generosity and invited to present the prizes.

Maura thanked all the committee; Tony for planning and booking everything with Woodenbridge Hotel and Golf Club; Mary, who organised the paperwork for the competitions, and Ray, who was such steady support for the outing. Thanks also due to the staff of Woodenbridge Hotel and to the Pro-shop for their warm welcome. Congratulations to all the winners, and to Jimmy, in particular, who won 1st prize with a great score. His prize was presented to him by Bobby and Eoin. Many thanks to Pat Finn for his incredible ongoing generosity and his award of 2nd prize to Ray. All other prizes having been presented, it was time to adjourn to the bar for plenty of fun, good humour and laughter til the wee hours.

Wednesday's weather was more promising and 20 players, in teams of 4, one person from each category, headed out for a straight scramble. Congratulations to every participant and to the winners. Beechpark Golf Club, 9th April 2026, kindly sponsored by Club na Múinteoirí.

There was much apprehension about getting to the venue because of the rolling blockades protesting oil prices, but happily the M50 was unexpectedly clear for the morning. As a result players arrived in good time, giving Donald enough time to do the book and Mary to get cards written up. Many thanks to both.

The course was in excellent condition, April weather spoiled by only one heavy shower at the start of play.

Very welcome good hot food was provided by pleasant catering staff, much cameraderie and socialising enabled in the relaxed atmosphere.

We welcomed Brendan and John back after their absences, wishing them well for future golfing and also Mairéad, photographer extraordinaire, Donald for prize envelopes, Mary for winning score calculating and Ray for support in prize-giving.. Much appreciated.

Wishing us all well for next outing, Woodenbridge, May 19th and 20th, competently organised by Tony........ thank you all.

Capt. Maura's Report from our Lucan GC outing, March 9th 2026.

28 golfers on the timesheet to play... all enthusiastic for 1st outing of 2026.... cool morning.... but happily promising to be mostly dry.

Disappointing though, that there was no room in which to do the 'book' and no tea/coffee facility on arrival.

Warm welcome, however, from the young man in the proshop.

But Donald, as usual, had all the 'book' well under control, exact €30 a head and the €2 appreciated.

Course was in good condition, enjoyable game (for some, the 1st 18 holes of the year).

There was dismay, also, on finishing the round, to find that there was no food available. It seems that catering staff were not advised to expect us.

As a result, when Mary had calculated the results and Maura had presented the prizes, golfers headed home, quite disappointed. Pat (a Lucan GC member) was very apologetic on his own behalf and on behalf of Lucan GC, and also supported by Don, urging Maura to send a written complaint.

There were some great scores brought in by some members, but, in general, they were average.

Best wishes to Pat, who has now recovered, but became ill en route and had to turn back home. We welcomed 2 new members, Eithne and Martin McIvor, who were among the winners on their first outing.... well done.

Capt. Maura Keogh's Report from Westmanstown GC 15-12-25

On my own behalf and on behalf of the committee wish a very Happy Christmas to all GnT players and their families and friends.

The last outing of 2025, and maybe among the most memorable, was in Westmanstown on 15th Dec., a fundraiser for West Dublin Youth Club, guided by Fr. John Regan, to enhance the lives and futures of local young people. There was a festive atmosphere, in mood and dress, teams got together and headed out on a beautiful morning, low sun, and great course, considering the time of year, early-bird Jimmy had already placed sponsors' flyers. We had exactly eight teams of four, including visitors, and Mary Kavanagh expertly created teams to play the sixteen holes available.

Jimmy had wonderfully organised sponsorship for the outing managing to exceed €3k for the deserving charity. Once again, he organised tickets for the National Concert Hall as prizes for this outing. Tony liaised with the club on our behalf and even managed to procure a buggy for the first liners. Our thanks to all who made the outing such a success.

Lovely meal over, Maura made a 'welcome' address, reminding us of the purpose of the outing and applauding members for their generosity, not forgetting those who contributed but could not be present, wishing speedy recovery to injured members. She noted our understanding that some people needed and deserved a hand up and that kindness is, to quote, 'doubly blessed, it blesseth him that gives and him that takes'.

Fr. John addressed us, thanking the society for our generosity and assuring us that the funds are put to very good use. He introduced to us, a young man, Darragh Kelehan, now a master carpenter, but whose adolescence and family life was blighted by drug addiction, who struggled for years to recover and who, in time, hit rock bottom in desperation and hopelessness. His visit to Medugorje and spiritual experiences of his own, proved to be the catalyst for the total transformation of his life. All who heard were impressed and moved by his sincerity and ability to describe how his mother got back her son and his wife and children's lives transformed. He is now a positive member of his community, giving back, helping those struggling with similar problems. He thanked GnTs very much for our significant financial support.

President Kitty, said how impressed she was by Darragh's story, saying that nothing extra needed to be added to what he said. She was in awe of his frankness and success in his effort to overcome his difficulties and wished him well, while presenting the funds to him and Fr. John.

Vice Captain Ray had a few very meaningful words to say about how our profession had a perfect opportunity and capacity to help pupils reach their full potential.

Prizes were awarded to first three teams, noting that only •3 points separated them.

Fr. John wished us all a very happy Christmas, adding that he had offered morning Mass for all GnTs and families. A bit of Picky-outy fun concluded our event.

Captain Maura's report from our Beaverstown. GC outing.

On behalf of our GolfnTees Society, members, Committee and myself may I offer our deepest sympathies to Donald, his family and friends on the sad death of his Dad, Donal. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.

In Beaverstown Tom generously stepped into Donald's shoes and did the 'book', even though he couldn't play himself, since no buggies were allowed.

Winter descended suddenly that morning, and even though we escaped the rain, conditions were not optimal, with dampness and plenty of fallen leaves, but also, happily there were plenty of apples for the 'crumbles' later.

Much appreciated was the sponsorship, which Ciarán Payne provided on behalf of CJ Fallon, organised by Jimmy, many thanks.

A big thank you to Mary, who had the cards and handicap details ready for the 22 players and also that she generously waited to calculate the results and winners, even though she didn.t complete the round herself.

Thanks to Tony for booking the venue and making certain that there would be hot food available after the round.

Appreciation too, to staff of Beaverstown, to Iarla, the Pro, and the catering staff.

Prizegiving was a cheerful event, thanks to Vice Captain Ray and to Mary as photographer.

To finish, it was repeated that Fr.John's Charity outing in Westmanstown is changed to Thursday Dec. 11th and any ideas for fundraising would be greatly appreciated.

Sept 8th 2025, Special Outing in Luttrellstown Golf Club, celebrating the inauguration of Kitty Guinan as President of the GolfnTees Golf Society.

Captain Maura Keogh's report:

So many positive elements combined to make this outing a memorable one: the weather obliged; beautiful, perfectly maintained course; players all smiles and everyone conscious of the significance of the occasion and supportive of Kitty's new status as our 1st President.

30 golfers, including 2 visitors participated in our new handicap/prize-distribution system with all interested to learn how it will work.

Thanks to Mairéad and Ray, who expertly handled the 'book' and the 2s. Many thanks to Alex who volunteered to be starter and photographer, and to Chris (proshop), catering staff and Klara who liaised with Tony to ensure a successful outing.

After pleasant refreshments in the Spike Bar, Maura welcomed players and thanked everyone who made the outing so enjoyable. She named the very supportive members of the committee and thanked Pat Finn for his generous sponsorship of 1st prize.

She went on to say that the outing had 2 objectives; 1st to honour Kitty as our new president and to wish her well to enjoy it, and 2nd to engage in our new pilot handicap/prize-distribution system.

Having thanked Mary and Tom for doing the cards, illuminating how the system operates, we went on to the prize-giving.

Just before 1st prize was announced, Maura introduced Kitty as a 'Legend' in the society, for her long, 28 years as a member, her Captaincy in 2013, and for her many years as secretary/sponsor fundraiser, (all correspondence hand-written) and also for many years, turning her sitting-room into a "board room".

Pat Finn, in a charming and eloquent few sentences, painted a sincere picture of Kitty as a worthy recipient of her new title, President of our GolfnTees Society. He alluded to her Clare roots, (the home of other Irish Presidents), her unwavering support for the society and her many personal contributions.

Kitty described her friend, Margaret McGovern, as a fun-loving, enthusiastic member of the society, who sadly passed away, but in whose memory the Margaret McGovern trophy is also presented to the winner of today's outing. She also expressed her heart-felt gratitude to the members of the society for the honour they were bestowing on her as their President.

1st prize was then jointly presented by Pat Finn and Kitty to Johnny McCaw who scored 28 points and who graciously accepted it. He was also very appreciative of the Margaret McGovern trophy which was presented to him by Kitty.

There was enthusiastic applause and laughter from members for Kitty, joined by her son, Noel, as the "green jacket" was put on her shoulders and a bouquet was presented to her by Maura.

Many members who for a variety of reasons could not make the outing congratulated Kitty, via the WhatsApp group text, on her elevation to the pinacle of our society membership.

Captain Mary Kavanagh's report from Balbriggan 23-07-25

We had a great turn out for our outing to Balbriggan G.C. - 40 played, 30 members, 8 visitors and David Duffy and Eoin Gannon from EDCO our Sponsors on the day.

The weather was mostly favourable with just a few of the last groups out getting a heavy shower. The course was in super condition and proved very testing for everyone.

Captain, Mary, thanked EDCO for their continuing generous sponsorship which is greatly appreciated and David said that EDCO was delighted to be involved and hoped to continue to do so.

She thanked Martin McInerney for liaising with Balbriggan G.C. to organise the day and for securing a great deal of just €30 Greenfee. Thanks and appreciation were also extended to Tom Donnellan and Martin for helping to do the Book, to Jimmy who acted as starter and photographer on the 1st Tee, to Tom Monaghan, Maura and Kitty for doing the cards and Don Kissane for taking the photographs at the presentation of prizes.

Congratulations to all the winners and to the 4 who shared the " 2s Pot"

The only downside to the day was "slow play" which many of the members remarked upon afterwards in the Clubhouse. Perhaps this is something we could be more aware of at future outings.

Report from Corrstown Ouring Friday 20th June. [Maura Keogh - vice-Capt.]

Unfortunately, due to illness, our esteemed Captain, Mary, was unable to attend the Corrstown outing. We send her all our best wishes for a full and speedy recovery.

It was a wonderful day with blue skies, and as a result, smiles all round. The course was in perfect condition and the pro-shop staff were on-hand and very helpful. Donald managed the book with assistance from Tom D and myself. A relatively small group of 21 Golf'n'Tees members attended, and also we were delighted to welcome Niamh Murray, director of Blackrock Education Centre, who very generously sponsored the outing and really enjoyed the game with Mairéad and Maura.

Many thanks to the catering staff for the lovely food, after which Niamh took centre stage for the presentation. We welcomed her to the GnTs family and expressed our appreciation for her sponsorship. After a few words about Blackrock Education Centre, Niamh presented the prizes to the winners on the day.

All in all a very pleasant outing and congratulations to Don on his impressive win playing off 13.

Capt. Mary Kavanagh's Report from Woodenbridge 2025

It didn't look very promising on arrival at Woodenbridge - grey skies, light rain falling but Tony assured us brighter weather was on the way....and is Tony ever wrong!!!! The day did improve and nearly everyone got back to the clubhouse dry. The course, once again, was in superb condition on both days and, as always, challenging. The scoring was very close. Congratulations to Patsy Mohan on winning by a single point with 36pts, pipping Pat Finn into 2nd place to win his own prize !!! Mary thanked Pat for his continuous support and generosity to our society. After a superb meal we had the presentation of prizes. Captain Mary thanked FBD Hotels for their sponsorship again this year. She also thanked all those who had helped to make the day such a wonderful success - Vice Captain Maura for always being on hand, the whole committee for all their hard work and a special thanks to Tony for all he did liaising with Majella in the hotel and with the Pro Shop. She expressed our thanks to Majella for the warm welcome we received and to the staff for the lovely meal provided.

The draw for the Singles Matchplay was also made and will be attached.

We then adjourned to the bar where a wonderful evening of ceol agus craic followed ably led by our musicians Fergal and Jimmy. Thanks to all who participated in song or recitation.

The Champagne Scramble on Wednesday in glorious sunshine was greatly enjoyed by everyone and again the scoring was extremely close.

And so ended a very enjoyable 2 days.

Captain Mary Kavanagh's Report from GnTS Beechpark Outing Mon. 07-04-25

We had 24 playing in our outing to Beech Park Golf Club. The weather was glorious and the course was in super condition. We were warmly welcomed by everyone in the Club - in the Pro-shop and upstairs in the restaurant. A testament to the fine weather was the great scoring on the day and the fact that the 2s pot was shared by 4 people...Martin McInerney, Tom Cunnane, John Buckley Jnr and Mary Kavanagh.

Captain Mary thanked Club na Muinteoiri and Cornmarket for their sponsorship of the day. On behalf of the members she wished Tom Donnellan a speedy recovery after his recent surgery and also to Pat Monaghan who had to withdraw from the outing due to illness.

A presentation was made to Martin McInerney to mark his Hole in 1 achievement on the away trip to Cambrils last Sept. We also had great pleasure in presenting Donal Healy with a cake to mark his 70th birthday.

Tom Cunnane was the winner of the outing with a great score of 39pts.

Capt. Mary Kavanagh's Report from Elmgreen Thursday 6th March

29 played on Thursday 6th March in Elm Green. The course was in great condition for this time of the year, although there was a strong breeze which caused difficulties for many!! A good number gathered in The Bell afterwards for the presentation, where we were well looked after by the staff.

Ray Tully was the winner with a great score of 35pts. On the Par 3s Kitty put us all to shame with a fantastic score of 13pts for the 4 Par 3s on the course. Well done Kitty.

There was no 2 scored so it's all to play for in Beech Park G.C. on 7th April.

Many thanks to Donald for doing the book and managing the finances, once again. Thanks also to the members who did the totting afterwards.

Report from Westmanstown the GnTs Charity Outing Fri 13-12-24

The GnTs Christmas Outing was, once again held in Westmanstown Golf Club. Capt. Mary Kavanagh was keen to continue with the Charity Outing established by Tony Hegarty supporting Fr. John Regan's West Dublin Youth Charity. Jimmy Cavanagh organised that the Tee Boxes would be sponsored by members and their connections. The very successful enterprise generated over €3000 for the worthwhile charity. Fr John was delighted to receive the contribution for his ongoing work and outlined how it would support his work and his clients. He also played in the outing.

Mary organised the teams based on our society handicaps and there were a couple of 'ghosts cards, to regularise the event in the case of absences or number shortages for the 4-Person Champagne Scramble. We were blessed with kind weather and relatively dry ground and a full 18 holes available [3 temporary greens].

The eights teams were playing for the wonderful prizes organised by Jimmy Cavanagh of pairs of tickets to the National Concert Hall for all the players on the top three teams. Eight teams teed off and the format allowed for all players to contribute to the team score. The top three teams were separated by just a single point testament to Mary's organisational prowess and our Society Handicap System. The Committee played their parts in making the outing a great success.

The atmosphere in the clubhouse afterwards was very seasonal. The pre-ordered food was lovely. The €25 green fee was most reasonable and Tony's liaison skills with the club were clearly obvious.

We remembered those deceased members and those who would like to have been present but for a variety of reasons [mainly health related] couldn't make it. They were with us in spirit. Both Gerry and Kitty, suitably attired, made it to the lunch afterwards and added to the festivities.

Hope all have a peaceful, hopeful Christmas and New Year season.

Results from Headfort Old Course Wednesday 23rd October.

Captain Mary Kavanagh's first outing in the Old Course in Headfort was well nigh perfect. Everything, except the traffic on the M50 obliged. Tony had negotiated the €35 mid-week rate. The course, the weather and the food were superb. The main prizewinners were spread across the categories proving the efficacy of our own handicap system. Maura Keogh, our new Vice-Captain, supported captain Mary with the scoring and presentation. Donald did the book once again. He thanked Michael Dempsey for his assistance at the desk. He obliged Donald. Donald will need such support in the role as he has to rush at each outing which didn't affect him negatively today but the Committee and Members will need to support him in this role. Our best wishes to those members incapacitated at present and welcome back to David O'Keeffe and Ciarán McAuliffe. The results sheet follows.

Mary announced that the next outing will, once again, take place in Westmanstown in aid of Fr. John O'Regan's charity. Tony to engage with Westmanstown. The money raised last year was fantastic and hopefully members can be innovative in raising sponsorship for the great cause once again. It would be wonderful if each player was able to match the green fee some way or other for the charity. Jimmy Cavanagh is hoping he can arrange prizes similar to last year.

Captain Tony Hegarty's report on the outing on Thursday 27-06-24.

St. Margarets GC was in immaculate condition as our golf entourage of 26 arrived ready for action. A strong wind made conditions difficult with the greens tricky but fair. Unfortunately, Brendan Mac Namee had to cry off as an old back injury flared up. We wish him a speedy recovery. On the bright side we had a welcome return of Kitty Guinan ,Gerry Fox and Pat Monaghan.

The golf was very enjoyable but slow.......we will have to look at this in the future!!

Ger Convery, with a tremendous score of 35 pts, was the outright winner with Mary O Hanlon 2nd on 33pts and Tony Hegarty 3rd on a count back 33pts.

Tony thanked Comhar Linn for their sponsorship and also Pat Finn for the wine prizes and Brendan Murray for a pickey-out prize.

Two 4 balls were raffled (Corrstown and Elm Green).

The food was lovely and very well presented. A voucher for a 4ball in St.Margarets will be used for the final of the Singles Matchplay. Tom Donnellan V Christy Mohally and Tom Hayes V John McAvoy are the semifinal.pairings.

Next outing and AGM will take place on Monday 26th of August. All motions must be sent in two weeks before the outing to Tom Donnellan or Tony Hegarty.

Kitty Guinan and Mary Kavanagh did Trojan work marking the cards and arranging the presentation etc. Donald O Brien and Brendan Mac Namee were super efficient getting the teams out while Maura Keogh and Mairead Finucane organised the wine and prizes.

A great day on the 27/6/24 was had by all. May we have many more.

Woodenbridge: Captain's Day and Scramble - 21/22-05-24

Tony's Captain's Day on the Home/Away outing in Woodenbridge was a great success. From the weather, which remained glorious despite the rattles of thunder nearby, to the thirty five, player turn-out on Captain's Day it was a memorable event. The course, despite some sandy greens, was in otherwise pristine condition. The hotel and the food were outstanding once again.

Tony was his inimical self at the presentations. He held his audience with repartee and wit while thanking all the parties who make an occasion like this possible. He forgot to mention how much time and effort he put into the organisation of the event and the turn-out bore testimony to his attention to detail and standing in the society. He thanked FBD for their generous sponsorship of the outing via Mary Kavanagh. He also held a minute's silence for deceased members [Jimmy Mulkerrins] and any indisposed family members.

The photo montage below identifies the various winners across both days. He was honoured to present his Captain's Prize to his good friend Pat Finn. Pat reciprocated with a framed poem he read and then presented to Tony. Pat himself has sponsored the valuable second prize hamper for many years and Tony thanked him for his generosity including his sponsorship of the wine prizes for this year. In his acceptance speech Pat thanked Tony for his service to the society, his friendship and mentioned that while putting on the last green the thought struck him that he might be in receipt of his own prize!. He sank the putt and was spared the jibes!

The entertainment after the meal provided in-house by Feargal [uilleann pipes, tin whistle and fiddle and voice], Jimmy [uilleann pipes and voice], Don [various stories told in Kerry style], Dónal [Rooster and songs], Brendan Mac [Country and Western] and Tony himself [Songs and recitations]. The rest of us really appreciate their willingness to perform on these occasions. Even a 'Royal Dublin' member, in attendance, was inveigled to sing, tell jokes and perform.

The Scramble on the Wednesday had slightly fewer players [ 7 x 4 = 28] but Mary organised the teams based on categories and gender parity. Again, the weather held and all enjoyed the different challenge. Tony's own team including Mick Cummins, Feargal Bracken and Dolores Farrell were victorious on the day to crown off a wonderful outing.

Corrstown Outing Friday 8th March

The first outing of 2024 was held on the River / Meadow courses in Corrstown GC. The weather held for us though the latter stages were getting colder by the minute. We had 26 players including two visitors, Corrstown Chairman Dónal Ó hObáin and former member Seamus McGrath.

Donald did the book with some assistance from Tom Donnellan. We decided that all players must be ready a half hour before their tee time as the player/s doing the book are under time pressure to get ready themselves and settle up with the club. Also, the old chestnut of 'Slow Play' was mentioned afterwards. As generally we go out in 10 min. slots please don't tee off until your time and then make every effort not to lose the group in front.

The ground conditions didn't allow for buggies and the best scores were in the low thirties. The greens were in great condition and there was placing everywhere but the bunkers were in play testimony to their conditioning. There was a fish and burger menu available and the food was lovely.

Capt. Tony Hegarty, playing off 17, won with 35 points. Interestingly, also playing off 17, Pat Finn claimed second place on count back with 32 points from third place Tom Monaghan. Tony also keeps the Margaret McGovern Trophy for 2024 for winning the first outing of the year.

In his speech Tony sent the sympathies of the society to the family of the late Paddy Walshe and to Tom Cunnane and Kitty Guinan for their recent sad losses.

He thanked those who played and hoped that Elmgreen would see an even bigger turnout. His own Captain's Day will be on the first day of the Away Outing in Woodenbridge on Tuesday 21st May. The 'Twos' competition was not won in Corrstown so it passes onto Elmgreen on Monday 15th April.

Capt. Tony Hegarty acted as the Starter for the well-populated time sheet. It gave him the opportunity to meet and greet the members 'Old' and New. Today we welcomed new members Laurie Healy [ whose offer of assistance at the sign in desk was gratefully accepted ] plus Bernie and Paul Turpin. Dolores Farrell was disappointed not to be able to participate today.

The winning scores of 31 points reflect the difficult, challenging course which, despite the 'placing everywhere' rule and the fine weather proved to be a test for even our best players. Despite being in a buggy Kitty wryfully, reckoned she had walked further than if she had left the buggy behind since she could only use the paths!

One of our more recent members Denis O'Keeffe managed to pip John Mc Avoy on his Back 9. Our thanks to Donald who managed the Book including collecting the Green fee and the Subs. The Twos pot was won by Don with the only 'Two' of the day!

I would like to thank everybody who played in my Captain's Day outing on Friday 30th of June in County Meath Golf Club, Trim. Altogether, 40 players took part, and while the weather as usual for this year didn't do us any favours, everybody involved had a very enjoyable day. The course was in excellent condition and represented a tough but fair challenge. I would like to thank Fallons and of course our own Pat Finn for their greatly appreciated sponsorship on the day. So, thanks again to Tom Donnellan, Donald O'Brien, Tony Hegarty, Maura Keogh, Mairead Finucane, and Pat Monahan for their huge contribution to the smooth running of the society in 2023. Following on from our very enjoyable trip to Coolatin and Woodenbridge, the society had a very successful outing to Lucan Luca Golf Club on Fri. May 12th. Founded in 1897, Lucan is regarded amongst the finest parkland golf courses in Dublin and so it proved. The course was in excellent condition, particularly the greens, and provided a challenging but fair test for everybody. For once the weather played its part and contributed to an enjoyable day's golf. Well done to everybody who took part, and the winners were as follows:

During the presentation, the sponsor for the day Comhar Linn and their representative Sean Murray were thanked for the very generous sponsorship of the event.

John Buckley was also thanked for the Trojan work he has done in securing so much badly needed sponsorship for the society over the past number of years. Our indefatigable secretary Tom Donnellan’s contribution to the successful organization of the event was also noted, particularly as he has been on holiday in Vancouver for the past fortnight.

Donald O’Brien was also thanked for his help despite the sad passing of his wife Eugenie’s mother shortly before the outing. Don Kissane did the book and organised the scorecards and grouped players into 4 balls. Mary Kavanagh, Brendan Murray, Kitty Guinan and Alex and Maura Keogh also played their part by computing the scores afterwards.

Next outing will be Captain’s Day in Co. Meath Golf Club Trim (C15X212) on June 30th. So, get that swing into shape and I look forward to seeing you all on the day.

The Coollattin / Woodenbridge Experience 2023 [ Capt. Brendan McNamee report ]

The issue of following up a major success with a sequel has always been problematical in the world of entertainment. Would Godfather 2 be as successful as Godfather 1? More pertinently for The Golfntees, could Woodenbridge 2 possibly match the success of Woodenbridge 1? Of course, the vital ingredients for the success of the trip were in place - the quality of our stellar production team and the all-star cast of not just golfers but entertainers who had signed up for the 2 days. The consensus amongst the 21 members who travelled was that this year's trip was every bit as enjoyable and successful as our trip in 2022. On behalf of everybody involved, I would like to thank our hard working society committee led by our events manager Tony Hegarty for their roles in organizing the trip. Donald O'Brien and Tom Donnellan also played their part in ensuring that everything was in place over the two days.

The trip began on Thursday morning with a singles competition at Coolatin Golf Club Co. Wicklow which is a renowned parkland course located on a beautiful 175 acres estate Co. Wicklow. Despite the occasionally inclement weather, the course provided a very fair test, and an enjoyable day's golf.

We then swiftly decamped to Woodenbridge Hotel where we were looked after brilliantly by the very attentive and welcoming staff. Everybody was delighted with the quality of the meal we enjoyed in the restaurant that night. Afterwards, we repaired to the bar, where after a few libations to warm up the vocal cords etc. a top class evening of entertainment ensued, led by the usual cast of troubadours etc. from our group supplemented by some performers from other groups who were eager to join in the craic.

In terms of the weather conditions for our outings this year, it would be true to say that we haven't had much good fortune in this department. Friday thankfully made up for this in a major way. The weather was very pleasant and we had the opportunity to experience an absolutely delightful golf course which the golfing legend Joe Carr called Ireland’s Augusta. We played a three person team event and the winners were:

3rd Tom Monaghan, Martin Troy, Ciarán McAuliffe

A special word of welcome to new member Donal Healy who amongst many others provided a major contribution to the entertainment in Woodenbridge as also did Helen Mulligan, making her debut with a beautiful rendition of “Still I love him”. Don Kissane performed 2 epic recitations and as the great Oliver Goldsmith once wrote “ And still they gazed and still their wonder grew, that one small head could carry all he knew.”

Thanks again to our organizing committee especially Tony Hegarty for their part in ensuring a really successful sequel to Woodenbridge 1.

Corrstown Outing 31-03-2023

Despite the ominous forecast and the inclement weather on previous days we managed to stave off the dreaded fourth postponement! Our Captain, Brendan, had implored the divinities and discovered multiple children of Prague in his quest for fulfillment.

Despite a few unavoidable absences we had twenty one members playing. We played, clad in wet gear, in dank weather with the underfoot conditions on the 'soft' side but the greens and tee boxes were pristine. We had preferred lies and the bunkers were out of play.

The results are attached with photos. Brendan thanked Corrstown GC and Tom Monaghan and Dónal Ó hÓbáin for their assistance in organising the event. The food on offer at €10 was very welcome after the hot showers. The GnTs subsidised the meal by €5.

Brendan wished Cliff Brown the very best in his recovery following an accident. He welcomed the new members Jimmy Cavanagh and Denis O Keeffe. Anyone who has any other potential new members please contact the committee.

He complimented John Buckley Snr. for his wonderful work garnering sponsorships for the society. For the current year he has collected in the region of €2000 for distribution as prizes. We will identify the sponsor on the timesheet of each outing. The GnTs will subsidise any deficits at an outing.

The committee will meet shortly to organise the Home/Away outing in Coollattin and Woodenbridge due on Thursday 27th and Friday 28th April.

GnTs Outing Scoring Mastersheet

The Heritage GnTs Outing Friday 4th November 2022

We were blessed with the weather for the outing on the prestigious Heritage course in Killenard, Co. Laois. The previous two days had seen torrential rain in the vicinity. The green had been flooded but testimony to the quality of the drainage systems the greens were perfect; the bunkers were mostly in play and the few wet areas were designated as GUR for the outing. The forward tees; placing everywhere and the benign weather allowed for a positive experience on a very testing course. The fact that only four players posted scores of 30+ is indication of how well-guarded the greens were and the difficulty of some of the flag positions. There was only one 'TWO' recorded and that was almost a 'hole-in-one' by all accounts.

Our thanks to Tom Morrissey from School Print Resources who, via his contact with John Harty, sponsored the outing. He also won the Visitor's Prize. Any member still in contact with their school please forward the company details.

Mary Kavanagh had the honour of winning the new 'Ladies Category' prize. The lady members of your committee, in particular, have sought creative ways of ensuring the society remains attractive to lady members and hopefully this category will assist in promoting new lady membership.

Our Captain Brendan McNamee did the honours before and after play. He thanked all the members who supported this event which the society subsidised slightly. He welcomed Martin McInerney back to the society and Martin immediately got to work by assisting with the cards, after play. He won third prize in the outing as well. He also welcomed new member Helen Mulligan and hoped her admission is the start of a resurgence in lady membership.

He thanked Mary Kavanagh for her very successfully organised trip to Spain recently. He considered the recent GnTs 40th Anniversary Event an unqualified success. He acknowledged all the committee officers who supported this event today as well as the sponsor Tom Morrissey. He outlined that the next outing will be the team event in Westmanstown G.C. on Friday 9th December. He lauded Tony Hegarty for organising the venue in December and the great value for the members of GnTs. We hope it is well attended in the usual Christmas Spirit. Tom Hayes will endeavour to create teams with handicap and gender balance.

GnTs 40th Anniversary Outing in Deer Park with Presentation - Celebration in the Teachers Club - Friday 16th September 2022

Thirty six players contested the 40th Anniversary outing in Deer Park Golf on Friday 16th September 2022. Thirty four played in the morning and two, Tom Hayes and Cathal O'Connell, who are still active teachers played after school.

We had ten visitors/former members, also including Alan Wright and David Duffy from our sponsors EDCO, with the remaining group current members. The day was magnificent and the course where most of us began our golfing careers was in great condition. Most of us hadn't played there for many years but the value and the course itself lends itself to a return visit in the near future. Hopefully, the new owners will continue the tradition of 'Pay and Play' which permitted access to the game historically.

We had as many apologies from the contacted group where former members and members wished us well on the day despite being unable to attend themselves. Apologies if there were former members who would have liked to be present but for whom we had no contact details. Brendan Spillane, a founding member, for many years living and working in Australia, sent his best wishes to the GnTs on this auspicious occasion.

Following the play in the morning the group gathered in Parnell Sq. for 7:30 p.m. [.... or a little later due to the clash with a Garth Brooks concert in Croke Park!] The committee had organised a display of memorabilia in one of the rooms. Trophies, posters, minute books, photographs covering the 40 years were displayed. A photo montage compiled by Cathal was on a continuous loop on a screen. Finger food was available for the gathering, courtesy of the society.

The indefatigable John Buckley Snr. was a more than able Master of Ceremonies and his concise, informative and entertaining introduction started off the formalities. He called for a moments silence for the many deceased members over the years and those currently indisposed. Maeve Brew sent a lovely card thanking the society for remembering her and her late husband and former captain Mick, on this occasion. He encouraged any former members, or if we know of others, to consider re-joining.

He invited the current Captain of the GnTs, Brendan McNamee, to the podium to thank all concerned with the Anniversary outing and to ask our loyal sponsors representative David Duffy from EDCO to present the prizes firstly to the visitors and latterly to the GnTs members.

Donald O'Brien's Captain's Day at Forrest Little Golf Club on July 1st 2022.

My very successful Captain's Day was held on Friday, July 1st 2022, at Forrest Little Golf Club. Despite June being an inclement month, the weather was mainly dry for my Captain's Day.

Firstly, I would like to thank all who were able to attend and those who could not be there but sent their best wishes. Twenty-six members played and one visitor.

I want to thank FYNAMICS [Financial Planners] who were the main sponsors of the outing and Pat Finn for his usual generosity in donating his bounteous hamper

Also, thanks to the committee members who supported me to make my day memorable. Maura Keogh organised the 'Goody Bags' and took the photographs at the presentation. Tom Hayes prepared the handicaps and sorted the results as they arrived. Tom Donnellan organised the timesheet and kept communications moving and the rest of the committee for their support and attendance throughout my tenure.

My thanks to Patsy Mohan and Johnny McCaw for doing the book and Patsy for being my liaison person with Forrest Little. We got a very good deal on the green fee and the caterer and staff looked after our dining requirements admirably.

Among the many who were unable to play spare a though for my vice-Captain Brendan McNamee who was sidelined with an injury in the week leading up to the outing.

I hope everyone enjoyed the day as much as I did.

Elmgreen GnTs Outing Report: Thurs. 19th May 2022

We had one of our smaller attendances at this Elmgreen outing. Five members cried off late due to circumstances out of their control. The 19 attendees had a wonderful day's golf on a pristine course and even greater chance of being in the winners enclosure!

The condition of the fairways and greens was wonderful. Most of the fairways were tree-lined but not punishingly so, as the undergrowth was cleared, in the main. The value, at €25 for the round, was exceptional. We had the luxury of playing in threes and, interestingly, two of the top three were in the second group out. Also interesting, was that the top players had handicaps of 16, 15 and 17!

Nobody managed a 'Two' despite one of the Par 3s being very short and accessible. The 'Pot' transfers to the next outing. The other Par 3s were difficult in the breezy conditions considering water hazards are not a feature of the course.

As the clubhouse lacks catering facilities the presentation was held in The Bell Gastropub in Blanchardstown. Some of the players, like myself, had prior commitments and were unable to attend the prizegiving, unfortunately. Hence we have no photographs to display.

Brendan McNamee, playing off 16, came in with a magnificent 39 points, which was four points superior to Patsy in second place with 35 points with Mary Kavanagh a further point behind.

Donald, a member in Elmgreen GC, playing off 6, was close to the winners enclosure with his 33 points which, unusually, was the shared score in all the categories.

Connor O'Donovan not alone won the Par 3s but also won the Voucher for Knightsbrook. We are raffling our remaining vouchers at each outing among the attendees. Usually we collect a Voucher from each course we play. Our thanks to Pat Monaghan for doing the book despite not being in a position to play himself.

We have no formal outing in June so our next fixture is on Friday July 1st in Forest Little which will be sponsored by Fynamics : Retirement and Lifestyle Financial Planning. https://www.fynamics.ie/

This outing is Donald's Captain's Day as Elmgreen [ his home club] lacks catering facilities. We wish him all the best and hope for a sizeable turnout.

Start considering any items for the AGM and, also, keep Friday 16th Sept. in your diary as our main 40th Anniversary event with Golf in Deerpark in the morning and a social evening in the Teacher's Club later that evening. Details at a later date. Any memorabilia welcome. An invitation will be sent to any past members for whom we have contact details.

The Matchplay Competitions have not been run since Seamus's [the coordinator] unfortunate illness. Whether we run the Matchplay Competitions in the future will be discussed at the AGM in St. Margaret's on Monday 22nd August 2022.

Woodenbridge GC Outing Report. 12th April 2022

Following Covid and Bereavement withdrawals we ended with 32 players in Woodenbridge for the Spring Home/Away in 2022. We had six visitors, mostly former members, and twenty six members. We needed a critical mass of 30 players for the package and we surpassed that figure.

Next we needed the weather Gods to regard us kindly as these events are organised, in hope, weeks in advance. Tuesday morning's drive to the beautiful venue was in atrocious rainfall. However the gloomy faces of the attendees that first morning gradually receded as the downpour eased and the cloud cover began to break.

The first day was sponsored by CJ Fallon, courtesy of Ciaran Payne. The first groups out battled the conditions hoping it would ease off which thankfully it did. The weather for the remainder of the day was benign for our Singles Stableford outing. The six visitors were vying for the bottles of Wine which were won by Joey Hughes and Pat Phillips with very respectable scores.

Fittingly, as authorized by the committee Donald took the opportunity to award Kitty Guinan honorary membership of the Golf'n'Tees for her unstinting service to the society in so many ways over many decades. This accolade has only been awarded once before to Robert McLoughlin [ EDCO ] in the history of the society. Congratulations to Kitty from all the society past and present.

As the day progressed the weather improved, the wet gear was discarded and the moods lifted. As the wonderful scenery and wildlife revealed itself the scores improved but the course proved to be challenging with 35 being the winners score and fourteen players between 30 and 34 points testimony to the accuracy of the handicaps, in the main.

We must laud Donald OBrien, our Captain and current Treasurer, who despite having much on his administrative plate for the couple of days and being our lowest handicapper, playing off 8, nonetheless managed a winning 35 points despite not scoring on the beautiful though challenging 18th hole.

GnTs Woodenbridge GC Wed. 13th April 2022 - TEAM EVENT

Following a wonderful meal on the Tuesday night and the festivities that followed with music voluntarily supplied by Feargal Bracken and Joey Hughes with contributions from Tony Hegarty, Donal Healy et al the craic visited the small hours.

The teams for the Wednesday morning competition were compiled by Tom Hayes taking requests for early starts; handicap equanimity; gender balance; buggy partnerships etc. into account. Luckily 32 players were available to play making 8 teams of 4 for the Scramble with each player having three drives minimum.

The weather forecast was kind and accurate and we played in glorious conditions in a wonderful setting. The outcome is in the following table. Comhar Linn, though not represented were our Sponsors for the event.

13-04-2022 Woodenbridge Teams Wed.

With less pressure in the Team Event the 'photographer' was in a position to record some action and inaction across the event. Thankfully all players played the entire round and an enjoyable congregation at the bar/restaurant afterwards complete with the prizegiving was a more than satisfactory conclusion to proceedings. The visitors were in the frame with the members for the prizes and four of the eight teams received rewards for their efforts. Our thanks to Mary Kavanagh for her assistance to Tom Hayes with the cards and also Tony Hegarty, who was the main liaison person with the hotel and golf course, for getting us tremendous value for the entire outing, considering a casual green fee would be €50 normally. Judging by the complimentary comments I think all attendees had a wonderful time. It would be remiss not to note that members who would normally have graced the occasion were unable to attend, for various reasons . Our thoughts are with you all.

Maura Keogh, not alone our busy prize buyer, found time to delay Pat Monaghan's departure and announce his significant birthday to the gathered playing colleagues. Pat was suitably embarrassed but sincerely grateful to Maura and the society. Maura also managed to garner greetings from the assembly for virtual best birthday wishes for Mairead, in Australia.

Finally, the current turmoil in eastern Europe came close to home with the hotel being used as a reception centre for Ukrainian refugees. A sobering thought while we played leisurely golf.......

Westmanstown G.C. GnTs Christmas Outing 10-12-2021

Despite Covid-19!! restrictions we managed to have our outing this Christmas. Once again, through the offices of Tony Hegarty, we managed to arrange Westmanstown Golf Club for a great price for both the golf and the meal. Most players joined the festive spirit being costumed appropriately. Some forgot...but saved the day with discrete baubles! A turn out of twenty eight players, including one visitor Liam Brennan, was wonderful in the circumstances.

This time of year is a lottery for golf but the Weather Gods smiled on us with a beautiful day, on a fully-open course in wonderful condition. Despite the fact that the 'Shotgun Start' was abandoned, on GI advice, we manages, at short notice, to rearrange the team event. Tom Hayes did a wonderful job organising the teams by handicap categories. A few cry-offs meant there were some late adjustments but the proximity of the team scores at the end meant that the teams were reasonably fair.

We welcomed back John Harty into the fold. We read Kitty's letter of thanks to the Society for their recent kind gift. Donald was his very efficient self in running the event with the assistance of committee members, Maura, Brendan, Tony and Tom. The clubhouse was very well laid out for 'distancing' and all players felt 'safe' during the meal and presentation.

Players who know of 'reasonably-priced golf course gems' please mention them on the GnTs WhatsApp so that we can build up a database to select from in 2022 and beyond. Best wishes to all indisposed members and wishing all as Happy a Christmas as circumstances allow.

40th Anniversary:

Heritage Killenard

Royal Tara GC. 27-10-21

Despite the predicted rainfall we escaped the worst of the inclement weather. We were all geared for the worst but we escaped with a couple of showers.

The Royal Tara course was in great condition and with the allowance of 'placing everywhere' it proved to be a wonderful location. The fact that the showers were available and the food was of a great standard, in a spacious comfortable clubhouse, all contrived to make this a memorable outing.

Twenty Five members played, including new member John McAvoy, who won the F9, and most players paid their membership at the Book. Christy Mohally officially rejoined the society today and just missed out on a prize. Donald presented the prizes and he was assisted by Tom D and Mairead. He thanked Brendan Murray and Tom D for their assistance on the Book earlier. He thanked Don for his assistance doing the cards after the outing. Please don't hesitate to offer assistance at outings.

The results sheet is attached with the modified prizes and the Par Threes Prize reinstated, being as accessible for lady members as the majority male membership. We will keep a close eye over the next while on the number of lady members who make the rostrum and adjust appropriately. The Home/Away events and the Westmanstown Christmas outing are Team Events and we may possibly have one more over the year. We need to retain a complement Singles Events for Golfer of the Year status.

Our thanks once again for the support of Tony Hegarty in organising the Shotgun Start for the Westmanstown Team Event on Friday 10th December. This is usually a very nice occasion with all players off together; in together and the dining/presentation ensemble afterwards. Mairead and Maura have requested that we wear token Christmas gear. John Buckley Snr's Captain's Day in Clontarf Golf Club Friday 03-09-2021

John's day, which was two years in gestation because of the Covid-19 restrictions, was an outstanding success. From the modest green fee and the wonderful meal to the great array of prizes and the benign weather the day was memorable in so many ways.

Pat Finn's generous hamper as second prize and John Buckley's wonderful Captain's prize were among the range of prizes on offer mainly from the Pro-Shop in Clontarf with John wishing to support the club after lean times. John's witty speech and his reminiscence of days in Pat's with Pat Finn were well received. John paid tribute to Kitty for returning to join us in the restaurant despite not being in a position to play today. He thanked the members for supporting his day and wished the society well going forward having survived these turbulent days.

Kitty and Fergal managed the book and Donald and Tom D sorted the cards while John was organising the dining area and prizes. Tom Hayes and Cathal had spent some time devising the starting point for the revised handicap system. Recently retired Johnny McCaw proved his golfing prowess with a magnificent 40 points off 20. We hope to welcome some new and rejoining members for the next playing year.

He announced the next outing for Beaverstown on Thursday September 30th which will be followed by the AGM. Motions for the AGM to Tom Donnellan ASAP. If any members knows of potential new members or sponsors please do not hesitate to contact us.

Hope you can help....If you have any memory helpful in filling in the remaining slots in the GnTs Winners Log since our inception nearly forty years ago we would be grateful. The Heritage Golf Resort 10-08-21

The GnTs had a very successful outing at the Heritage Golf Resort, Killenard on Tuesday 10-08-2021 in very benign weather conditions.

This was our tentative, first outing post-Covid after a hiatus of a year and a half. We had the benefit of the 'Tom Hayes Voucher' which reduced our green fee from €35 to €25 for members on the day. This was great value for the calibre of the course we were playing. Thank you to Tom and his caddy Gerry Wiggins, our visitor on the day. Twenty nine played on the outing.

We played off the Green Tees and the members brought their Handicap Index which was read off the chart in the Heritage to establish a playing handicap for the day off the Green Tees. Excitement was generated when the points gained were revealed. The joy was short-lived when players realised that all the boats were rising. Nonetheless players who might not have featured previously, with the difficulty of the course, now felt they had some hope.

However, Tom Hayes, the Handicap Sec. will, in consultation, reconstruct a Society-based Handicap System just for GnTs purposes from the Captain's Day in Clontarf on Sep. 3rd. This can be operated on the society laptop with little effort from the members charged with 'doing the book' or 'checking the cards' on the day of an outing. This was unanimously agreed by' EGM Text Vote' with no dissenting text. This will ensure that the 'officers' on the day can enjoy their day and members will have some continuity of handicap within the society.

A former member Martin McInerney joined us today as a visitor and duly won the Visitor's Prize! Gerry Wiggins, as mentioned previously, was joined by the third visitor Cillian O Breachain, son of our esteemed member Feargal. There are a number of possible new/returning members with a cohort of about 40 playing members at present. Anyone aware of a potential new member please contact John Buckley Snr ASAP before the new membership year.

In the current social and economic climate requesting new Sponsorship is difficult but if anyone is aware of a possible candidate please advise us. Pat Finn has offered to sponsor the 2nd prize, once again, for Captain's Day. He has done so for more years than I care to remember and his generosity is exemplary. Should he ever wish to discontinue the practice it will not be forgotten how supportive he has been over so many years. Thanks Pat.

In his closing remarks John Buckley Snr., our Captain, thanked all the members and committee for 'sticking with the program' over these trying months and he particularly wished Seamus Mulkerrin the very best wishes of the society in his protracted illness and also Brian, with his current ailment. Brian has had to opt out from his role as vice-Captain and Treasurer but he has forwarded the name of an able replacement and Donald O Brien has accepted the invitation to join the committee and act as vice-Captain to John until the transition at the forthcoming AGM. He has also agreed to take on the role of Treasurer. Welcome Donald and all our best wishes. Donald is in the process of identifying a candidate to act as his vice-Captain,

John announced that his Captain's Day has been reinstated in Clontarf Golf Club for Friday 3rd September with Fourballs from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. at 10 min. intervals. Details of the meal and presentation will follow. On account of the disruption to the previous booking the course manager in Clontarf has offered the GnTs the course at half the normal fee i.e. €20 instead of €40! Our recent good fortune with green fees can not last as we all know fees are rising to offset the losses during the protracted closures but the last two outings have been very good value.

The AGM will take place at the outing following Clontarf. Mairead is arranging for Beaverstown in late September or Early October. As there are a handful of teaching members still on our books we are conscious that we have to allow them time to get to the course after school and yet get the outing played before sunset! It is in all our interests that we avoid 'Slow Play' and not lose the group in front.

If any member has a motion for discussion at the AGM please forward it in a motion format. If it is not formatted the committee will reframe it so it can be proposed, seconded and voted on without much delay. Please forward them by text for GnTs / Tom Donnellan's attention to 0874115145 on or before Sunday 12th September.

Our overdue 40th Anniversary will be a feature of the next GnTs golfing season. Anyone with photos / memorabilia please advise a committee member.
