To survey my sixth graders on their digital footprints, I used a copy of our MOOC's google form which you can view here. Below you can view the results of this survey on a class of 22 year- 6 students. For me, there were some surprising results. For example, the replies to question 5 show that the students spend 2-3 hours a day online. At least, I hope some of this time is spent on the blog I have made for them to provide further practice in EFL. The replies to question 6 also were unexpected as I didn't know they used social networks such as as Snapchat and Instagram. Concerning question 7, I believe the frequency of chatting with friends is rather high. About question 9 results, there is a high percentage of parents who allowed their kids to use social media. However, the replies to question 10 reveal that not all of the parents check what their kids do online frequently. For question 14, the students replied that play games with others online every day. Finally, concerning question 15, there is one child who has been bullied once and one more than once, which I wasn't aware of.
As a conclusion, I might say that my students are quite active online at home and use social networks despite being under 13. As an educator, I should try to find out more about the social networks my students use and the risks they may include. Teaching them the importance of a positive digital footprint online should be made a high priority. Digital literacy and digital citizenship should be fostered in class if those students are to make a positive impact on the world.
