When his wife, Ceil, learned about the accident, she was understandably distraught. She had four children at the time; how would she get by if she lost her husband? What would the children do without their father?
Mrs. Leonard called Father Peyton to tell him what had happened. He responded, “I’ll be there immediately.” So Father Pat got in his car and drove through the snowstorm to the hospital. He arrived to find Denny in terrible shape: broken back, broken legs, broken arms, broken ribs… The doctor said that he probably wouldn’t make it to the next sunrise.
Father Peyton started praying, and kept praying with Ceil and Denny for days, asking the Blessed Mother to intercede and reminding her that this was a Rosary family, but ultimately praying, “Thy will be done.”
Denny did recover and resumed a normal life, expanding his family and caring for them as any father would. His son later said that the family considered it a true miracle that he lived, healed, and moved on from his injuries.
