1.) Learn to perform X-rays
How I can accomplish my goal:
Observe the staff and my peers while they perform surgeries.
Ask the staff for advice.
Request to practice on mice under supervision.
Updated Goals: After a few weeks of observing the staff and my peers, I have learned to perform X-rays on my own. The lab has trusted me enough to complete the X-rays as they do the surgeries. I plan to continue on improving my skills as I possibly move forward with the lab
How this goal can help me in the future:
Exposure to utilizing X ray machines that may be similar to ones used for medical school.
Practice precaution while working with machines.
Learn various positions to manipulate the body in order to get the proper outcome for an X ray.
2.) Learn to handle mice
How can I accomplish my goal:
Observe graduate students and staff while they handle the mice.
Request to practice on mice under supervision.
Use resources provided by the lab to watch how trainers handle mice.
Updated Goals: I have been able to practice with handling mice as I observe the staff and assist in a few procedural surgeries and injections. I have been able to manipulate the mice during collections as well as learn how to perform injections on my own under supervision.
How this goal can help me in the future:
Exposure to working with lab animals.
Hands on practice that allows me to apply what I have learned.
Learn techniques to be gentle with animals that I could carry with me throughout my time in the lab.
3) Learn to assist during surgery
How can I accomplish my goal:
Request to observe during surgery.
Shadow each phase of surgery in order to learn the protocols and procedures.
Work through my schedule to find time to observe and plan ahead for future surgeries.
Updated Goals: I was given the opportunity to be able to assist in surgeries when I worked through my schedule and found ways in which I could clear my day to help. I help assist and do my own X-rays as well as helping the staff run tools and mice back forth.,
How this goal can help me in the future:
Exposure to similar environments I would like to work in.
Allows a glimpse of what it feels like to be involved in big operations.
Gives an insight of how my future could look like if I choose to follow this path.
As I move forward in my internship, I have learned effective ways for integration and application. I have learned many things in the last few weeks that I aimed to do from my list of goals such as learning to do X-rays and handle mice. By handling mice, I have learned how to hold them properly and how to manipulate their senses. I can see the progress I've made so far as I continue to work on my skills independently. I have noticed my supervisors are beginning to trust in my work as they give me a task to work on without supervision. I plan to keep working on my communication skills. Although I have learned to consistently email my supervisors when needed, I know I need to be more elaborate in who I email as well as learning to keep my team updated on what I have done to keep everyone on the same page. This internship has helped me gain understanding in working with others who have made research their career and the passion they have for what they do. I can see the drive they have for the lab and it encourages me to continue my coursework in pre-med as I hope to find the same drive they do in my field of work one day.
The skills I have learned in the lab will be applicable to my future as I can use my laboratory skills for classes such as Chemistry and Biology, as well as future projects I plan to do in the future with genotyping if I choose to pursue research. Aside from laboratory skills, I also plan to use the communication skills I have learned through my internship with my day to day activities as I learned how to properly assess the needs I have on my own and relay the information back to my supervisor in order to communicate what needs to be done.
