Music and lyrics by Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz for OST "The Hunchback of Notre Dame"

God Help the Outcasts

I ask for nothing, I can get by
But I know so many less lucky than I
Please help my people, the poor and down-trod
I thought we all were children of God

Confession: This song wets my eyes every time I listen to it. And I thought the full-length animated feature deserved more attention than it had. The story had some pretty mature, controversial themes... I wonder how the adults managed to explain them to kids.

Phil Collins from OST "Tarzan"

You'll Be in My Heart

Why can't they understand the way we feel?
They just don't trust what they can't explain
I know we're different but deep inside us
We're not that different at all

There are many lovable songs from Disney full-feature animations, but this is one that profoundly struck me. Liked it best when Phil Collins performed this at the Oscars in 1999. The competition was tough but "You'll Be in My Heart" was awarded Best Original Song.

Irene Cara from OST "Fame"

Out Here on My Own

Sometimes I wonder where I've been,
Who I am,
Do I fit in.
I may not win,
But I can't be thrown,
Out here on my own.

When I was a kid, I thought high school would look as confusing but thrilling as New York City's High School for Performing Arts in Fame.

Roberta Flack, featured in "Play Misty for Me"

The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face

The first time ever I kissed your mouth
I felt the earth turn in my hand
Like the trembling heart of a captive bird
That was there at my command, my love

Haven't seen this Clint Eastwood directorial debut. Surprising for such a tenderhearted song to be in a film considered to be the precursor of Fatal Attraction.

Lick the Tins from OST "Some Kind of Wonderful"

Can't Help Falling in Love (Elvis Presley cover)

Take my hand,
Take my whole life, too
For I can't help falling in love with you

This cover as accompaniment to the film's end-credits has strangely remained in my memory. Some Kind of Wonderful was one of my favorites in my betamax binge days.

Music and lyrics by Lionel Bart for OST "Oliver!"

Where is Love?

Must I travel far and wide?
'Til I am beside that someone who
I can mean something to...
Where, where is love?

Mark Lester was very charismatic in his portrayal of the title-role but this Wikipedia article about "Oliver!" (1968) mentions the singing vocals was dubbed by Kathe Green.

Beatles, interpreted by Timmy Mitchum and Carol Woods from OST "Across the Universe"

Let It Be

And when the night is cloudy
There is still a light that shines on me
Shine until tomorrow
Let it be

Always brings tears to my eyes; one of, if not the most emotional moment of this film. Try replacing the images with those that are happening to us today. Share your thoughts in Talkback.

Katie Irving from OST "Carrie" (1976)

I Never Dreamed Someone Like You

So come on let's dance
Let me have it
While I have the chance
'Cause there's another world
Where there are other girls
But tonight there's only me

The unexpected sweet song from the most horrific movie about bullying in high school... oh, and it's about telekinesis too.

80's kid and MTV's first generation

This "Top 100 New Wave Songs" Spotify playlist is gonna stay in front of this section for a while. First encountered this list at Digital DreamDoor (or DDD).

New wave and MTV influenced my eclectic taste in music. The eighties was a great time to listen to music. And to watch! This Youtube video tells about the MTV's first airing and the very first batch of VJ's.

(First time to embed a Spotify playlist -- tell me how this was for you in "Talkback." Thanks.)
