Captain's Message

Captain ‘s Message 2024

Welcome back to another fantastic season at Gleneagles Golf Club with a special welcome to our new members.  Our club runs on cooperation, goodwill, and participation, and the order of the day is Fun, Fitness, & Friendship! I hope that you will enjoy all aspects of our club for the 2024 season.

We commence our 7-month season on April 1st, jumping right into the Ice Breaker Tournament, followed by the mid-April Four Man Tournament on the 17th.  Members will receive a Weekend Update from me each Saturday morning, reviewing the events from the past week, reminders for the present week, and projecting a few weeks with future events and reminders.

We welcome 29 new members this year!  This is slightly above our annual intake, as we usually take in 20 or 25 new members.  We have grown significantly since May 4, 2020, the first year of Covid, when we opened with just 65 members.  Our membership cap is now set at 135, and we have a healthy waiting list of “future members”.

A list of Executive Members who have responsibility in the major departments within our club is listed below.  We meet a few times in the year, pre-season, once or twice mid-season, and again in October to review the year and plan for the next.  Your executive manages the governance, tournaments, daily procedures, special seminars, etc.  They are a hard-working group, in constant email contact, and I am fortunate to lead such an able and enthusiastic group.

Special thanks go to Owen Wong for the production of this handbook.  Keep it handy or near your desk… you will use it for dates, tournaments, finding other members’ email and phone numbers, and useful information.

The website of the club is full of valuable information.  In addition, check the photo section that features the latest tournament photos on top with previous events underneath.  Further, there is a Google calendar that you can download and sync to your own Google Calendar for ease on your phone or computer. And, save the site to your browser’s bookmarks for easy reference.  https://sites.google.com/view/gleneaglesmensgolfclub/home

Our club is rich with enthusiastic volunteerism creating smooth running activities.  We will be hosting a tournament every two weeks throughout the season (October has one due to weather), and in between those two-week time frames, there are smaller events such as the four mixed tournaments with the women's division, 2 junior tournaments, 4 PGA Partnership tournaments, and the 2 dayBowen Island Men’s Golf Club.  In addition, there are events requiring your participation, such as assisting participants of the Special Olympic evenings, working with grades 4 to 7 children in the Adopt a School Program at nearby Gleneagles (Ch’axay) School, or being a honeypot tabulator for a 3days, or a tournament lead or helper, or an executive member.  This year again, there will be four opportunities for you to play with the women in the four mixed tournaments.  As these are popular, please pick the one you like most, as preference will be given to applicants who have not played a mixed tournament as yet through the season over those who have.

It's a beehive!

Seeing all the activity all season due to all members stepping forward to play a small part in the large association makes me proud to be one of the bees.  In addition, we play at one of Canada’s finest 9-hole courses with spectacular scenery – we are blessed!

Lastly, with 29 newies totaling 135 members, please get into the habit of wearing your name tag.  Name tags are an asset to assist our new members to learn the names of their new golfing pals and vice versa.

Vice-Captain Jonas Edenvik joins me in wishing you all a very enjoyable and successful golf season!

Sincerely, Phil Marshall, Captain
