Note: I did not create and I do not own Garfield the Cat in anyway, shape, or form. This was for a class assignment and purely for fun!
In this course we had to take on the challenge of designing a magazine layout. Mine was based on the cartoon cat, Garfield. The project seemed simple at first, requiring various learned design methods in Illustrator such as stroke widths, vectoring, tracing, and other editing features. I had to incorporate the rule of thirds and the Fibonacci sequence to create a visually sound design that spanned across two pages—for the magazine style. We were also required to use a quote specific to our cartoon.
I immediately faced a challenge: incorporating a story into my design while keeping it engaging. My quote, “Cats rule the world” was attempting to add a fun element to an otherwise small, informative piece about the creator of Garfield, Jim Davis. Complementary colors were used, such as blues contrasting Garfield’s bright orange fur, using orange to highlight my pull quote and any other important elements in my design.
As a new user of Illustrator, many different design obstacles blocked my path.
I struggled with the vectoring tool heavily when tracing Garfield, and as a result, ruined him when cutting him in half to create the two-page design. Hours of intense learning and work were ruined, warping him, and leading to his deletion. This taught me the importance of patience and perseverance when working on complex projects. When restarting, a much better Garfield was created using the experience from the first creation.
This project was a challenge. It had me stepping out of my comfort zone and working on creative art pieces, rather than logical user-tested designs. It demonstrated my ability to learn new technologies and create a visually appealing design. Despite my aforementioned challenges, I was able to complete the project and have fun along the way.
