This Album Transcends Time is an in progress album of original pieces by queer/trans/gender expansive musicians and poets that weaves their old music, words, and themes with their present selves. The idea came to me during an “Experiments in Creativity” class with Literary Arts taught by Coleman Stevenson. I was inspired to create new music and poetry exploring my changing relationship to gender and creative expression over time that incorporated or responded to my identity and art pre-transition. I thought the prompt was too good to keep to myself, so I began sharing it with others in Portland’s nonbinary/trans community.
Each of the 19 artists will conceptualize and record one new composition each. Our aim is to have a demo and a show with a selection of pieces in celebration of International Trans Day of Visibility. This proposal is to support Phase 1 of the project, which includes the composition of 19 pieces and funds to begin recording in a professional studio to serve as a proof of concept. The intention of this album of songs and poetry is to create new work, build community, skill-share, and encourage collaboration within a supportive group container. Our hope is that the album will increase queer/trans representation and inspire others to revisit, recontextualize, and transmute past versions of self through the alchemy of the creative process.
