Things to Do
Local Trail Systems
Silver City has several Local Trail Systems that are great for getting out and stretching the legs. These trails range from easy to moderately difficult. The following link has maps of some the better trail systems. https://outdoor.wnmu.edu/areamaps/
Gila Cliff Dwellings
The Gila Cliff Dwellings are about 2 hours north of Silver City at the end of Hwy 15. A moderate hike leads to the Cliff Dwellings where interpretive guides are available to explain the various cave dwellings and history of the Mimbres People. http://www.nps.gov/gicl/index.htm
Hiking, Backpacking, and Birding
There are numerous Hiking and Backpacking opportunities in the Gila Wilderness. Check out the USFS web site for a list of trails with descriptions of each. http://www.fs.usda.gov/recmain/gila/recreation
The local Audubon chapter has descriptions of favorite local birding sites: https://swnmaudubon.org/birding-locations. Over 300 species of birds recorded in Grant County alone!
