Emergency closure updates and timeline
Monday, April 6, 2026: Flooding is found in various areas of the library. The cause is determined to be a broken pipe that dumped 500 gallons of water into the library. Several areas within the library are affected. Initially, we expect a week-long closure.
Week of April 6, 2026: During clean-up, asbestos is found beneath the old carpet. The asbestos must be abated, and the insurance company determines that all carpet in the main library area needs replacing. Expected closure time: three months. The building is expected to reopen mid-July.
Week of April 13, 2026: To ensure the safety of library visitors and staff, the City decides to abate all asbestos and replace all carpeting not covered by insurance. Considerable funds are saved by adding the additional reconstruction to the current project instead of completing it as a separate project. Because only a small portion is not covered by insurance, there is no additional closure time expected.
Monday, April 20, 2026: We announce the opening of a temporary, teeny-tiny library inside the lobby of the Giddings Economic Development Corporation.
Week of May 25, 2026: After learning of supply-chain delays, the contractors adjust the completion timeline. We now expect the library building to re-open mid-August.

Contractors have supplied a timeline for our return to the library building! However, we understand the unpredictable nature of building repairs, so if the contractors update the below timeline, we'll communicate changes immediately.
Aug. 10-14, 2026: Contractors return furniture, shelving, materials, and books to the library building.
Saturday, Aug. 15: Last day of service at the temporary, teeny-tiny library inside the lobby of the Economic Development Corporation. Books may be returned at the temporary location through this date. Beginning Aug. 17, books may be returned at the outdoor book drop at the library building.
Monday, Aug. 17: The outdoor book drop reopens at the library building.
Aug. 17-22: Library services are unavailable. All staff will be unpacking, cleaning, and organizing to prepare for the building's reopening.
Monday, Aug. 24: The library building reopens to the public, resuming normal operating hours, M-F 10A-6P, SAT 10A-1P.

Frequent questions about the reopening
Are you planning a grand-reopening event? Yes! Although the building is officially reopening Aug. 24, we'll have a grand-reopening celebration in October.
Why isn't the grand-reopening event happening now? We're playing a bit of catch-up with preparations for our September book festival, so we're focusing all our planning efforts on that annual event.
Why are you closing Aug. 17-22? We need all hands on deck to move back into the library building! We also have to pack up the temporary library. Computers and printers, likewise, must be reinstalled.
Will my books be overdue during the closure? Books already overdue remain overdue. All current due dates will pause during the closure. Feel free to use the outdoor book drop at the library building beginning Aug. 17.
