If you are traveling from the US, you need to have your passport in order to cross into Gibraltar from Spain. Since I am a Spanish Resident, I need both my residency card and my passport to enter. When the whole covid thing was going on there were a lot more restrictions to crossing the border. Now that it has died down somewhat its much easier with less restrictions.
You may or may not get a stamp when crossing the border. If you have already got a stamp in a different EU country you won't get a stamp from Spain. If you fly to Gibraltar from London, you will get a stamp in London and a stamp at the Gibraltar Airport.
You can enter Gibraltar with your European ID or your passport.
Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory, so you should have full rights and access to enter Gibraltar. Even after Brexit, the movement for British and European Union Citizens is still pretty free flowing. The Government of Spain continues to work closely with Her Majesty's Government of Gibraltar to continue a free flow back and forth as many Spanish citizens are employed in Gib.
I highly recommend this power bank when you are traveling. It's lightweight for the power that it packs. If you are traveling you should have a power bank. Click the photo, or click here to check it out.
Watch this video about where to start and what to look for when crossing over into Gibraltar from Spain. If you are coming to Spain from the Gibraltar side, it's just the same. If you are in Spain and driving, there is a lot of free and paid parking nearby the border. There is one main pay to park lot that is really close to the border. Check it out here:
You can click here on the map and use it to follow to this pay to park parking lot which is just a quick 3 minute walk to the border. I recommend parking here or somewhere close, because you can head over to Gibraltar by foot and also explore a little bit of downtown La Linea.
I love using this GoPro for all my pictures and videos when I'm on trips. Check it out, if you have been thinking about getting one, I think its worth it. Check out my review here:
Once you find parking just focus in on the Rock of Gibraltar and walk toward it. The beacon of hope in the distance is the golden arches. From this parking lot, there is a pedestrian walk way with some small stores, kiosks and Spanish restaurants, and they are building a new market for use. See the video for that by clicking here.
Follow this pedestrian walkway toward the rock and you will see The Statue of the Workers. This is a good starting point to walk toward the border. See my video above or click here, and review the process of going in.
The South of Spain is very sunny, so bring sunblock. I recommend bringing some with you as opposed to trying to buy it here. We have over 340 days of sunshine a year (oddly as I'm writing this today, its raining), and in the summer time, its super hot and you will need sunblock.
Check out Gibraltar Customs and Spanish Customs by following these links and make sure you have what you need to enter.
Here's a quick story: I knew a guy through a friend and he was living in Spain from South America, and had overstayed his travel visa here in Spain so basically he was here illegally. He had his Paraguayan passport and went to the border to cross over to Gibraltar. On the Spanish side, they stopped him and checked his passport and saw that he was not legally supposed to be in Spain, so they locked him up and threw away the key. Well they didn't go that far, they did still have the key and they let him out later that day, but it was a long process and he was crying the whole time. Moral of the story in this case is make sure that you are good with your travelers visa.
If you are a US Citizen you have a 90 day Visitors Visa automatically from the Spanish government and other European Union States. So as long as you are not overstaying the 90 days you don't have to worry at all. Our American Passports are pretty powerful with travel so keep it close and use it wisely.
Traveling to Gibraltar via the airport, make sure you have the right sized suitcases. I was checking into the Gib Airport once and the guy tried to tag me about my carryon, which was the right size. But they are kind of sticklers about luggage size. Having good luggage for travel is essential. Check out these suitcases here!
