During the day on 2 March, 2022, a Boeing CH-47 Chinook Helicopter was heard in La Linea and spotted scaling up the Rock of Gibraltar.
Citizens in the streets of La Linea were heard murmuring, "Gibraltar is preparing." Preparing for what some may ask. With the recent events of Russia attacking Ukraine just a week ago, it leads citizens to ask the question, "Is Gibraltar Preparing for some sort of military escalation?"
This question is justified based on the events occurring in Europe. Although, Gibraltar would not directly go to war against another country, it is a British Overseas Territory, governed by Her Majesty the Queen.
This is the first time I have ever seen a military helicopter bringing crates up to the top of the rock. There is a road to the top and several ways to get there, so using the helicopter leads to some questions.
One woman on Facebook commented that a guard at the border told her it was "new radio equipment" for the airport radar located at the top. That may very well be, but there could be other motives, especially since Gibraltar has continued its support for Ukraine and its animosity toward Russia. This week Gibraltar announced that Russian ships of any kind are not allowed to port in the country.
The military presence in Gibraltar, the Royal Air Force, and the airfield belong to Great Britain. Gibraltar is a military stronghold for Great Britain and a force to be reckoned with in the South of Europe. The country that control Gibraltar, historically controls the entry and exit of the Mediterranean Sea. Since half the worlds ships and cargo pass in front of Gibraltar, it's no wonder it is a strategic stronghold.
A Chinook Military Helicopter flies to the top of the Rock of Gibraltar carrying cargo from the airfield just below. Thousands of people walk and drive on top of the airfield daily to work in Gibraltar and return back to Spain.
Why would Gibraltar use a military grade helicopter to bring supplies up to the top of the Rock of Gibraltar? They would if they were preparing for something that they weren't quite ready to tell the general public. All signs point toward Gibraltar's support of Ukraine and denouncing of Russian aggression.
Gibraltar may very well be bringing supplies to the top of the Rock for safekeeping and storage. After all, the Rock is like Swiss cheese on the inside. It's dotted and layered with caverns, caves, and tunnels. It has been and will continue to be the perfect place to hide and defend from military aggression.
Due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Gibraltar has had an outpouring of support for the country. Gibraltar has announced its solidarity with Ukraine by illuminating its historic monument, The Moorish Castle, in the colors of the Ukrainian Flag.
The Gibraltar Postal Service is offering free postage for mail mailed to a Ukrainian Address. The Minister for Postal Services, the Hon Vijay Daryanani MP, said: “This is another example and further demonstration that Gibraltar stands close with Ukraine.
Gibraltar has also expressed its support of a Ukrainian March for peace today in Casemates Square in central Gibraltar.
Gibraltar has made clear that is against the "Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine."
It has banned Russian aircraft from its airspace and airfield.
Ships and vessels on the water have also been declared not to enter Gibraltarian ports.
Gibraltar has made it clear that it "is in accordance with actions being taken by the United Kingdom and European Union."
Due to all of the above listed reasons, I think it is highly logical that Gibraltar is making military preparations in regards to Russias attack on Ukraine. As other countries throughout Europe align on sides, it is no wonder that Gibraltar, and its head, Great Britain are taking decisive measures ahead of time.
I also think it's highly likely Gibraltar is taking military preparations ahead due to its use of the Chinook Helicopter yesterday. Even if the majority of people are told that it's just for radio equipment, it should not be left to chance that the moving of this "radio equipment" is happening days after war erupts in Europe.
For context of where I am located in comparison to Ukraine and the current war in Europe, it's about the same distance as Minneapolis is to Miami. That's not very far away. Especially in the sense that other countries are starting to line up and take sides for this war.
For me it's quite obvious the use of the military helicopter in Gibraltar to carry cargo up to the top of the Rock of Gibraltar is in preparation for military actions. Gibraltar is a strategic military location with a major world shipping lane, and the outlet from the Black Sea, which is where this war is currently taking place.
If more countries follow suit and perhaps further military escalations, the place I live here in the South of Spain is a primary target because of Gibraltar. Over the next few days, I will keep my eyes open as to what else might happen if no peace treaty is determined.
I will certainly say, I do not trust a simple answer of "its just to update the radio system."
