The Gibbon Surgical Society Historical Vignettes series celebrates Jeffersonians who have made lasting contributions to the field of surgery. Each vignette is researched and written by medical students at Thomas Jefferson University as part of the Gibbon Surgical Society, honoring the legacy of Dr. John H. Gibbon Jr. - pioneer of the heart-lung machine and open-heart surgery.
These profiles highlight notable surgeons, educators, and innovators who helped shape Jefferson’s surgical history. Selected vignettes are often presented at Thursday morning conferences in the Department of Surgery and archived in the Jefferson Digital Commons, with several featured in The American Surgeon.
