Bricklayer

Who Are We?

The professional Bricklayers apprenticeship and training system is widely recognized for producing highly skilled  craftworkers. All apprentices accepted into the program receive hands-on and in class training on both classic  and state-of-the-art techniques and materials. Students start the program learning proper techniques on placing with more complex projects such as radius walls, arches, and the use of a variety of materials and patterns.

What is a Bricklayer?

A Bricklayer lays brick, stone, structural tile, marble, granite, concrete block, structural tile, terra cotta, terrazzo, and any other masonry materials to build or repair walls, partitions, fireplaces, sewers, and other structures.  They put together the masonry materials with mortar using the trowel, chisel, jointer, brick hammer for cutting  bricks and power brick cutting saws. Bricklayers also install firebrick linings in industrial furnaces. The Bricklayer’s technique is to spread the bottom and side of each unit with mortar and position it by hand, cutting off excess mortar and later trimming it to achieve a neat appearance. Work is kept level by use of a tightly stretched  line and must be checked frequently for level and plumb. Bricklayers often work from scaffolding and sometimes  work at heights exceeding 100 feet above ground level. Much of the work is outdoors and generally depends on  suitable weather conditions. The work is active and often strenuous, including crouching and heavy lifting.
