In a day and age where societies and communities interconnectedness grows on social media so does the probability of individuals growing addicted to social apps. In this project I take a quiz and read two articles that discuss the power and appeal social media has over individuals.
On the left, you can see my results! Before reading the two articles, I completed this quiz. The results didn't surprise me at all. One, my life is a little too busy to distract myself with social media. Two, I find that social media agitates me far more than I'd like to admit, so I avoid it as much as possible. The only social media I do use is youtube and even for that, I have limitations set that help me reduce the amount of time I spend on the platform.
Although I don't have any social media accounts like Instagram and Snapchat, I am someone who watches a lot of youtube; For educational and leisurely purposes. I find it very interesting to see where I land in this chart! I'm also wondering
Social media is a tool! It promotes politics, and it displays society's opinions. What I learned, though, is how toxic society makes social media platforms. According to the articles, social media can't be trusted because of misinformation and toxic content, but social media doesn't post that content; the people do. So I guess I learned that social media is a platform used by a lot of deceptive and untrustworthy people, which is kinda sad.
I think social media has a positive effect on society. Communication and exposure are important, and social media plaforms cultuvate open spaces that promote freedom of speech and union. I acknowledge the above charts' concerns as it pertains to social media, but I don't agree that those concerns are social media's fault. Instead of pointing a finger at platforms that are just a bunch of coded numbers, I would encourage individuals to point the finge to society itself. We make social media the environment it is, it doesn't magically become an untrustworthy platform.
