Hills & Mountains

There is no generally agreed official distinction between a hill and a mountain. The United Kingdom and the United States used to define hills as summits less than 1,000 feet (~ 300m) above mean sea level (AMSL). However, both countries abandoned the distinction in the mid-twentieth century (National Geographic). It is difficult to maintain that an elevation of 900 ft AMSL near the coast is less mountainous than an inland mountain with an elevation of 2000 ft AMSL, but which is only 500 ft above the surrounding terrain. Subjective opinions will also depend on culture and local environment. Therefore this section contains elevations with either name, which is given according to local usage.
