Islands

Islands differ from other elevations only in that they are surrounded by water. In the Ewe language, the word kpɔ can be used to refer to either. Ghana has three types of island environment: coastal, river, and lake, the latter being entirely due to the creation of the Volta Lake in 1965. Although provision was made for the resettlement of over 700 villages, some communities have managed to remain on, or return to, the larger of these islands. Most of the river islands are in the Volta estuary downstream of the Akosombo and Kpong dams.
