The Indian Geographical Society

The Indian Geographical Society (IGS), the oldest Geographical Society in India, initiated its existence on 31st March 1925 and was officially inaugurated in Chennai (Madras) on 16.03.1926. At present, the Society is housed at the Department of Geography, University of Madras, Chennai. The IGS has been bi-annually publishing The Indian Geographical Journal since the year 1926. Since its inception, the journal has maintained its quality and contributed to the development of geography in various spheres of the discipline. Since 2011, the IGS has conducted state-level talent tests among young geographers at UG and PG levels and has encouraged them with cash awards and certificates. The IGS is currently entering its 100th year, and this conference is the flag-off event for the centennial year celebrations.
