Phivolcs Director Renato Solidum said that more than knowing where the hazards are and the potential impact of the earthquake on their neighborhood, people must consider knowing what ways can be done to lessen potential casualties and prepare for the “Big One.” Solidum strictly emphasizes the importance of following the Building Code to ensure the stability and the quality of the building. He added, “Shaking doesn’t kill, collapsing buildings do.” Aside from that, it is advisable for families to prepare by knowing the safest areas in their house, possible evacuation places, and by conducting regular earthquake drills at homes, schools, and offices.
