This project was the first time I incorporated electrical components into my designs. The first steps are the most memorable and the most important, no matter how simple they may seem.
Ignoring the fact that the incandescent light bulb heats the brass head of the giraffe to scolding temperatures, this lamp is one of my favourite items around the house.
The design is elegant and well-proportioned, details in the head reveal that it is hand-made, adding character to the lamp, and the brass hind legs act as a stabilising base to counteract the leverage from the long neck.
The bamboo is sanded until it feels soft to the touch and stained to reveal the long, uninterrupted grain.
The brass is cleaned and polished so that it is smooth and elegant when it rests in your hand.
Next step is to replace the incandescent lightbulb with an LED one so that the lamp can be left unsupervised without fears of it spontaneously combusting or setting the drapes on fire.
