This simple stainless steel bookmark was created after a completely unexpected moment of inspiration. The minimalistic yet simultaneously complex design was prototyped out of plastic on a 3D printer. After some contemplation, it was clear that making the bookmark by hand with the tools available to me would be near to impossible. Instead, I got in touch with a plasma cutting workshop in the UK and had a small batch of giraffes cut out for me.
However, the plasma cutting process left blobs, burn marks and caked grime on the surface of the stainless steel. Not only was this aesthetically unpleasing, but it left marks on paper and was uncomfortable to hold.
To fix the issue, the giraffes were placed in a rotating tumbler drum with a superfine steel medium which is used for heavy deburring, shining, polishing and burnishing metal parts.
Cleaned and polished, the bookmarks were ready for the final process.
To ensure that the bookmarks did not damage pages, I 3D printed a punch to give the neck of the giraffe a slight kink, shaping it into a clip-like form. The two halves of the punch were pushed together with a simple g-clamp which provided enough force to deform the 1mm thick stainless steel.
