Sustainability was the most significant complex issue for me this year because it connects environmental health, human well being, and long term global stability. It’s not just about protecting nature, it’s about how people use resources, produce waste, and make decisions that affect future generations. What made it stand out to me most was realizing how interconnected everything is. Issues like climate change, deforestation, and pollution don’t exist on their own and significantly impact ecosystems, economies, and communities at the same time. My experience in the Brazilian Amazon played a big role in shaping this understanding. Seeing the rainforest firsthand made sustainability feel real instead of theoretical. I saw how deforestation and environmental changes directly affect biodiversity and the daily lives of local communities. It showed me that sustainability isn’t just a global issue, it’s also very local and personal for the people who depend on the land. That experience made me more aware of how human actions can have both immediate and long term consequences.
To learn more about sustainability, I combined experience with academic and personal research. During my program, I participated in discussions, observed ecosystems, and learned from guides and local perspectives. Outside of that, I looked into topics like climate change, conservation efforts, and sustainable development through class materials and independent research. I also started paying more attention to my own habits, like energy use and waste, to better understand how individual actions contribute to larger systems. One thing I realized is that sustainability is challenging because it requires balancing different needs. For example, economic growth and environmental protection don’t always align, and solutions are not always simple. This made me think more critically about how decisions are made and who they affect. It also showed me the importance of education and awareness in creating change.
Looking ahead, my goal is to stay informed and involved in sustainability efforts. I want to continue learning about environmental issues, especially conservation and climate change, and understand possible solutions. I also plan to make more sustainable choices in my daily life, such as reducing waste and being more mindful of resource use. In addition, I’m interested in getting involved in activities or organizations that focus on environmental protection, whether through volunteering, advocacy, or campus initiatives. Overall, sustainability is important to me because it affects both the present and the future. This year helped me see that being part of the solution starts with awareness, but it also requires action. I want to keep building on what I’ve learned and find ways to contribute to a more sustainable and balanced world.
