OVERVIEW:
I am a geophysicist whose research focuses on the earthquakes and sounds generated by volcanoes and landslides (and occasionally concerts). Many of the volcanoes I study are in the submarine environment, so my research often involves working at sea. I am always excited to hear from prospective graduate students, so if you enjoy math, physics, and geology, please reach out at caplanj@wwu.edu.
RECENT NEWS:
I'm excited to see this paper, led by WWU undergrad Carmen Atkins, with important contributions from WWU grad student Olana Costa, in print! Carmen and Olana used hydroacoustic data to investigate how lava was emplaced offshore Kilauea volcano during its 2018 eruption. Critical data for this project came from WWU alumna Samantha Russell who provided us with photos taken when the tour boat she was on was hit by a lava explosion.
