Are you a WWU student interested in applying to graduate school in the geosciences but don't know where to start? Are you a student interested in attending WWU to do graduate work? I've tried to collect relevant information on this page, but feel free to contact me if you have questions about any of this!
Years ago I presented in the IRIS seminar series on "Tips and Tricks for Applying to Graduate School in the Geosciences". That presentation is shown at left. It's a bit old, but most of the information is still good.

Interested in working with me?
Start by reading my research page to see what type of work my students and I do. You are also welcome to peruse my publications here (Western CEDAR) or here (Google Scholar).
Before applying, please contact me at caplanj@wwu.edu. This allows me to let you know whether I am currently taking students, and to let you know what specific research opportunities are available at present. I can also put you in touch with my current and former graduate students so that you can hear about their experiences at Western and decide if my advising style would work for you.
My students and I aboard the R/V Kilo Moana in 2010. We had just deployed a network of ocean-bottom seismometers on Kama`ehuakanaloa seamount (formerly Lo`ihi).
