Norway is a Scandinavian country in northern Europe. It has an estimated population of almost 6 million people, with two dialects of Norwegian, Bokmal and Nynorsk, being the official language. Around two-thirds of its geography is mountains, and has some 50,000 islands off its coastline. Norway has one of the longest and most rugged coastlines in the world. It shares a border with Sweden, Finland, and a 120 mile stretch with Russia. The longest road tunnel in the world is located in Norway, running 15 miles long. The natural resources Norway has are petroleum, natural gas, iron ore, copper, lead, zinc, titanium, pyrites, nickel, fish, timber, hydropower. Despite oil and gas being a large part of their economy, Norway produces 98% of its domestic energy from hydroelectric power plants. The Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded in Norway's capital of Oslo since 1901.
I chose to to research Norway because it is the next country I want to visit and happens to be well-known for one of its geologic features; fjords! Norway always looked like a beautiful place, but something about the landscape and culture specifically draws me to it. I'm guessing there's a lot of subconscious influence that comes from fantasy media that makes it appealing to me. Seeing the Aurora Borealis would be amazing. I am also very interested to see their society as Norway has consistently held top rankings in the world for quality of life, education, healthcare, happiness, etc. The only negative is that I hear there is a reason their cuisine isn't widespread.
The most defining feature Norway is known for is probably its majestic fjords.Â
Norway is an excellent place to see the northern lights. The long nights during November to February is the best time to go.
While it does not come to the forefront of the mind when thinking about Norway, it does have some incredible wildlife.
Vikings! Pretty big historical footprint from those guys. Seriously cool architecture.
Norway has some amazing cities. They are very clean, have great views, and lots of museums and parks.
