Water Usage
Figure 7.) A pie chart demonstrating the percentage of water usage for different purposes (Trapp Jr. and Horn, 1997).
The Castle Hayne aquifer in North Carolina is primarily used as a water source for industrial purposes like mining. Only around 13 million gallons per day were used for public supply (Trapp Jr. and Horn, 1997). The North Carolina Division of Water Resources is the government body that is responsible for the quality of groundwater in the state (“Water Resources | NC DEQ” n.d.). In eastern North Carolina (where the Castle Hayne aquifer is located), there are 15 counties that are part of the Central Coast Plain Capacity Use Area, which requires permits for groundwater use (“Central Coastal Plain Capacity Use Area (CCPCUA) Water Withdrawal Permit | NC DEQ” 2023).
