A common contaminant in the Castle Hayne aquifer is salt water. Salt water has intruded into the aquifer in some areas, such as a mine near Aurora and in wells at the U.S. Marine Corps' Camp Lejeune (Lyke and Coble, 1987). It has even been seen in the public water supply in Wrightsville Beach during the summer tourist season (Lyke and Coble 1987).

There is also DNAPL contamination at the Camp Lejeune Military Reserve in Onslow County. The U.S. Navy is the lead agency under CERLA responsible for remediation and investigation of the Camp Lejeune Military Reserve superfund site (“CAMP LEJEUNE MILITARY RES. (USNAVY) Site Profile” n.d.).
