However they are stopped by an unkown god known as the "Sustainer of heavenly principles." Aether is sealed and wakes up 500 years later with his sibling missing and his power gone.
One day, while fishing for food, Aether fishes Paimon out from the water.
Paimon taught the traveler the language of teyvat. Paimon suggests they find his sister by speaking with The Seven, the seven gods of Teyvat. Along the way they reach a Statue of the Seven, a statue of one of the seven gods, which ordinary people may pray to. Aether is able to resonate with the statue, allowing him to obtain an element without having a Vision, an item used by certain people to harness elemental powers of the world. Aether begins his journey in Monstadt, the city of freedom. Where he meets Outrider Amber, a member of the Knights of Favonius, the military faction of Monstadt. Aether helps the Knights of Favonius against a threat to Monstadt, the dragon stormterror who was minipulated by the Abyss Order. Aether learns that the bard, Venti, is actually the Anemo Archon (the god of wind), Barbatos. After the fight with Stormterror, Aether and Venti run into the fatui and encounter the harbinger, Signora. Signora steals the gnosis (proof of Venti's godhood) from Venti. Aether learns that the Tsaritsa, the cryo archon and ruler of Snezhnaya, is collecting the gnoses of gods for some unkown plan. Venti apologizes to Aether as he does not know where his sister is, but rather directs Aether to Morax, the geo archon and oldest of The Seven.
Paimon and Aether attempt to meet with Morax at the Rite of Descension, but he inexplicably dies and Aether, as a foreigner, is blamed. Childe, another fatui harbinger, helps Aether escapes and suggests Aether seeks the help of the Adepti, the god-like entities of Liyue to resolve the issue. Aether is introduced to Zhongli, a consultant at the Wangsheng Funeral Parlor. Zhongli is supposed to take Aether to the exuvia, Morax's corpse, but in reality, its all a ruse for Childe to steal the gnosis from the corpse, however, when he gets there, the gnosis is gone. Childe then release the god Osial from its binds, causing a disaster requiring the Liyue Qixing and the adepti's help to resolve. It is later learned that Zhongli is the geo archon, who faked is death with The Tsaritsa's help in exchange for his gnosis, Zhongli recommends Aether go to Inazuma.
Aether is recalled to Monstadt where he meets a man hunting the Abyss Order named Dansleif. While traveling with Dansleif, Aether finds his sister Lumine, but learns she is actually the leader of the Abyss Order, he tries to convince her to leave with him, but his pleas fall on deaf ears. Lumine uses a portal to leave as Dansleif chases after her, Aether attempts to follow but is locked out.

Aether meets with the Raiden Shogun and is almost killed by her, but he escapes and meets with Yae Miko, the Guuji of the Grand Narukami Shrine. Aether discovers Ei, the archon, is actually inside the Raiden Shogun, which is actually a puppet, Aether also learns that the entire mess was caused by the Fatui in order to get the shogun's gnosis. Aether battles Signora to the death in front of the throne and Signora loses and is killed by Raiden. Aether is almost killed by Raiden as he attempts to leave the Tenshukaku, but is saved by the resistance. This gives Aether the chance to confront Ei again and show her the results of the vision decree convincing her to change. Neither Yae nor Raiden know of Aether's sisters whereabouts or the unkown god and instead suggest they go to Sumeru.
While traveling to Sumeru, Aether must go through the Chasm, During this time he meets up with Dainsleif and discovers a plot from the abyss order to restore the hilichurl's minds. They eventually arrive in Sumeru where Aether is met with a vision of the Irminsul Tree. Aether and Paimon try to speak with Lesser Lord Kusanali but are prevented by the sages of Sumeru Akedemiya. The sages put the entire city in a dream in order to harvest energy to create a new god of wisdom through Scaramouche. Aether discovers the plot and with the help of others stops the akademiya. Kusanali then removed data on Greater Lord Rukkhadeveta from Irminsul. While speaking with Kusanali, Aether is knocked out by a soundwave from Il Dottore and both Kusanali and Ei's gnoses are taken. Kusanali suggests Aether go to Fontaine and speak with its archon, Focalors. Aether is also informed that the fatui consider him a "descender" but not his sister. Aether meets with Nahida and Scaramouche to find information in Irminsul.
