The Bulletin is a long running periodical published by the Watauga Association of Genealogists (WAGS) of Northeast Tennessee. Founded in 1971, WAGS first published the Bulletin in May of 1972. The Bulletin features a great many stories and research collected throughout the southeast, especially Tennessee. The Johnson City Public Library maintains all back issues within the Tennessee Room under the call number T-R 976.8 WAT. Those with additional questions regarding publication, membership, and research can consult the organization directly by visiting during their monthly meeting. The Watauga Association of Genealogists meets the first Tuesday evening of each month at 6:30 p.m. in the Jones Meeting Room of the Johnson City Public Library (except January and February), located on the first floor immediately to the right of the entrance.
Family Tree Magazine is one of the most popular publications dealing with family history and genealogical research published in the United States. A typical issue includes topical guides to ethnic specific searching, technology reviews, and the latest news regarding history and genealogy. While especially useful for professional genealogists, amateur and casual researchers can find a plethora of great resources and techniques within this magazine. The Johnson City Public Library only keeps extant copies for three years at a time. Unlike other materials in the Tennessee Room, this periodical is available for checkout except for the most recent edition. All issues are shelved in the Tennessee Room at the new books/periodical section immediately to the right, located in a light blue bin.
Now and Then magazine is one the premier cultural periodicals pertaining to east Tennessee and the surrounding Appalachian region. Published by the Center for Appalachian Studies and Services Department of East Tennessee State University (Johnson City, TN), Now and Then explores topics of interest to Appalachia such as social life, cultural customs, modern issues, food pathways, environmental concerns, personal essays, poems, photographs and more. The Johnson City Public Library has extant copies dated between 1988 and 2016 and are kept in the periodical annex just beyond the Tennessee Room. Current issues have switched to an all-digital format and are not available at the library at this time. Those looking for newer editions are encouraged to reach out to East Tennessee State University directly.
