Johnson City, TN City Directory (multiple)

various. // Call number: T-R 975.897 JOH (year)

Perhaps the greatest tool that the Tennessee Room has to offer, the Johnson City TN, City Directories provide a wellspring of useful insight into property research and the lives of your local ancestors. Here you will find information on your ancestors’ employment, physical address, spouses, and other familial connections, all conveniently alphabetized and indexed. Got an ancestor who was incarcerated but you are not sure when? Does he/she suddenly disappear and reappear from one directory to the next? Consider these clues! Use the directory in conjunction with other resources such as Google Maps to view their historic properties or places of employment. Although it lacks a complete run, the Tennessee Room collection contains directories as far back as 1923. Some are located in the cabinet due to fragility (see staff for details).

Washington County, Tennessee Tombstone Inscriptions, v. 1&2

by Charles M. Bennett // Call number: T-R 929.50976897 BEN v. 1 & 2

Despite great strides by resources such as Ancestry.com and findagrave.com, not everything has been indexed and made available online. Many gravesites (especially former church and family graveyards) now fall under private property and are subject to the auspices of the current owner. Physical indexes such as these still prove their worth when researching your hard to find ancestor’s final resting place. Included are basic transcriptions of tombstones that including the full name (as written on the stone), date of birth, and date of death. Some transcriptions include some genealogical information such as familial connections between spouses and children. Each section is organized by cemetery name and plot number. The title also includes a county map and a page number index at the back of the volume.
