Is This Pic Real?
Participants can engage in two games, Which Face is Real? and Odd One Out to test their ability to differentiate between real and computer-generated images.
Which face is real? is an University of Washington project where you identify which picture is a real human face and which is computer generated.
Odd One Out is a Google Arts & Culture Experiments where you try to identify which is a real artefact and which is computer generated.
The purpose
The challenge aims to educate participants on identifying manipulated or AI-generated images, equipping them with the skills necessary to discern between authentic and fake visuals.
What you need
Setting it up
Access to Which Face is Real? and Odd One Out.
How long does it take?
A few rounds on each game is expected to take about 5 minutes.

Suggested follow-up
Reflect on your experience: Is one game easier than the other for you? Why? What do you look for to identify if an image is real or AI-generated?
Share indicators of AI-generated images, for example those mentioned in Peter Chiykowski's Twitter first thread and a second post.
Discuss the implications of fake images in media and society.
Where it works well
Both games provide a fun way to challenge players’ ability to identify manipulated or AI-generated images.
What to watch out for
Which face is real? may have been developed prior to the explosion of generative AI tools and some images look dated.
Neither game explains how to identify if an image is manipulated or AI-generated.
