Our journey began at 11:15 a.m. as we departed from Thessaloniki’s “Makedonia” Airport with Ryanair, via Charleroi Airport in Belgium.
We arrived in Esposende at 7:15 p.m., where the host families were waiting to welcome us and take us to their homes. After settling in, we spent the evening getting to know our host families and enjoyed dinner together, marking a warm and friendly start to our experience.
Our day started at 10:00 a.m. with our first visit to the school. We gathered in a classroom where the teachers presented the weekly programme and the activities they had organized for us.
At 11:00 a.m., we visited the Maritime Museum, where we learned about the local history and the importance of the sea for the region.
After lunch at the school canteen, at 2:00 p.m., students from all participating countries gave presentations they had prepared for the Erasmus programme.
Later, we went bowling, which helped us bond even more with students from other countries.
In the afternoon, we enjoyed a beautiful sunset while eating pizza, before returning home.
Today we had the opportunity to visit the beautiful city of Porto and explore it up close. We began our day with a walk around the Aliados area, where we admired the impressive buildings and the city’s unique architecture.
Then, we headed to the local market, where we took photos for our project. There, we observed everyday life and got a deeper sense of the local culture.
Afterwards, we had some free time to explore the city on our own, walk through its narrow streets and enjoy the atmosphere. During that time, we took a cable car ride and saw Porto from above, enjoying a breathtaking view of the city and the river. It was an unforgettable experience.
Later, we visited São Bento railway station, one of the most beautiful stations, famous for its stunning tile panels.
Our tour continued through several historic areas of the city, where we saw important landmarks and learned more about Porto’s history.
At the end of the day, we returned to Esposende with our host students, full of wonderful images and experiences.
The day began with breakfast with our host families, giving us the chance to experience their daily life more closely. At 9:30 a.m., we went to school to take part in a “Tech Morning” dedicated to technology.
During the workshop, we tried virtual reality equipment using 3D glasses and watched an impressive dinosaur video from Jurassic World. We were also introduced to a drone and learned how it works, while watching live footage from its flight.
Additionally, we explored projects created by students using Arduino and sensors, which were particularly interesting.
After lunch at the school canteen, we explored Esposende through the GooseChase app. By completing various challenges, we took photos and discovered the city in an interactive and fun way. The day ended with a visit to Barcelos with the Portuguese students, where we had free time to walk around and do some shopping. Overall, it was a full and enjoyable day, rich in new experiences and knowledge.
On Thursday, we went on a trip to the beautiful city of Viana do Castelo. Our first stop was the Navio Hospital Gil Eanes, a former hospital ship that used to provide medical care to fishermen working in the cod fishing fleet. During the visit, we explored the different areas of the ship, including operating rooms, patient wards and crew spaces, gaining a deeper understanding of the difficult conditions faced by fishermen in the past and the importance of this floating hospital.
After the visit, we had lunch in Viana do Castelo and enjoyed some time to relax and take in the atmosphere of the city.
Later, we had a cultural tour, walking through the historic centre, where we admired traditional architecture, charming streets and important landmarks. The city’s connection to the sea and its rich cultural heritage made a strong impression on us.
In the afternoon, we continued our workshop activities (Part II), focusing on photography. We took pictures throughout the visit as part of a photo contest, trying to capture the most interesting and meaningful moments of the day. It was a creative and engaging experience that allowed us to see the city from a different perspective.
On Friday, our last day in Portugal, we experienced many beautiful and memorable moments. We woke up relatively late and had breakfast around 10:30 before heading to school. There, we watched videos and saw photos from the entire week, taken by teachers and photographers, reliving all the experiences we had shared.
After that, we received our Erasmus participation certificates, which reminded us of everything we had learned and experienced during the week.
At around 11:30, we left and went to a large shopping centre in Porto, where we spent several hours shopping and enjoying our time together. Around 6:00 p.m., we returned and later went to watch the sunset by the sea. It was a truly magical moment that perfectly closed our trip.
In the evening, we went out to a traditional restaurant, where we tried the famous local dish Francesinha, a rich sandwich with bread, various types of meat, melted cheese on top and a spicy sauce, usually served with fries.
Later that night, we went out to a bar in Esposende, where we had a great time and celebrated the end of this unique and unforgettable experience.
Very early in the morning, the host families brought the students to the hotel where the teachers were staying, marking the beginning of our journey back home. The atmosphere was filled with emotion. Tears, warm hugs and heartfelt promises to meet again showed how strong the bonds we had created had become and how meaningful this Erasmus experience truly was.
Late at night, we arrived back in Thessaloniki, carrying much more than luggage. Our suitcases were filled with unforgettable experiences, genuine friendships and memories that will stay with us for a lifetime. It was a journey that may have come to an end, but will always live on in our hearts.
